Title: Boot badge prep
Post by: Meallbhan on March 03, 2016, 11:00:14 pm
I am going to sort my boot badge coz it's got whiteworm but was just wondering what prep would be best.
Do people sand the silver back to bare metal, or just give it a light sanding before spraying?
Thanks

have you thought about changing for a mk6 handle, the chrome part seperates off, then you can paint the backing / logo differently.

back on topic, i light sanded mine down with wet and dry, just to give the primer something to grab onto, then primer, then the main colour, (several light coats of each) followed by lacquer.

I sanded back down to bare metal and it never really looked right. Honestly the cleanest look is the mk6 badge!!

Check on my thread for side by side comparisons.

I've been reading about the mk6 badge. It seems the best option. I'm a bit concerned though as some people say it fits straight on and others say it doesn't fit at all. Who to believe? I found a genuine mk6 badge on eBay for £30 so that not too  bad.

^^^ Luke, in your post above you say you have a mk6 badge but in the link you supplied you say it's a mk4 badge.......

I've heard the mk4 badge is a bit smaller diameter, like 4 or 5mm and won't fit over the slow close handle. I measured mine and it looks like 110mm, which is the same as the mk6 badge I've seen on eBay.  As long as the curvature is the same I should be good??

Ok originally I took the cover off my mk5 mechanism and then glued on a mk4 VW symbol we'll say. It never sat flush so I then opted to replace the entire mechanism with a mk6 mechanism. I bought one off here for maybe £60 I think.

Link up the one you're looking at on eBay.

I can tell you for a  fact from past experience the best thing to do is entirely replace your mechanism with a mk6 one. It will fit guaranteed but will cost upwards of £50 if you're lucky

Here's the link the the badge i found on ebay   http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Golf-MK6-Genuine-VW-Rear-Trunk-Boot-Badge-Emblem-Chrome-/331047036163?hash=item4d13f0e503:m:mlb-wTQvjV9KCiROLKC5QTg

I havent looked for a complete unit yet

I just found this too  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-Mk6-Rear-Boot-Handle-6R0827469-6R0-827-469-/252307615335?hash=item3abeb4ae67:g:gisAAOSwUuFW2EJg

So this is a complete unit that will replace my original one?
What about coding, is it needed?
Is it soft close like mine?

Just a new badge may be easier it this needs coding, plus its £50 just to get rid of a little whiteworm. Expensive sounding.

Complete mechanism is a straight swap, loom can be a tight stretch but that's it....

My Mk6 handle (colour coded) on my Mk5....

Thanks, this one looks a little f**ked tho on the chrome. I'll keep my eyes on eBay for the next wee while.

Yes thats another option I'm thinking about, I can't decide if I want chrome or coloured.
