Hi all,
A friend of mine is selling his Audi s3. He had an accident in it last year, he hit a fence and there was no other people involved. He planned on getting the car repaired but never has and now he wants to sell it.
So the car...
It's fully hpi clear
09 Audi s3 (facelift model)
S tronic gearbox
3dr in black
Genuine 45,000 miles
Full service history - invoices & stamps
4 owners including himself
2 keys
Usual s3 spec plus parking sensors and Bluetooth
The damage..
From what I've seen its going to need:
Near side wishbone
Near side wing
Near side door
Front wheels refurbing
2 tyres
Near side curtain airbag
Near side seat airbag
Seat belt pre tensioner
And 50/50 chance it may need jigging/pulling but can't tell until it's stripped
He's said I could have it for around 7500-8000
Anything requiring paint and repairing isn't really an issue for me as I have a mate that does that (insurance approved repairer) so I get mates rates.
Just wondering if anyone thinks it's worth getting and roughly what I realistically could sell it on for once done.
Had a few mates tell me to snap it up but I'd like some second opinions.
He payed £15,500 for the car last summer and it was pristine condition pre accident, all service history, mileage etc is 100% genuine.
-
No. It'll be a complete headache trying to fix everything and not worth it for that money.
-
A realistic sell it on would be what the market value of the car now and what someone's willing to pay for it dependent on the quality of repair whether it's a cat d c etc.
Why if there's more damage then he's letting on?. how matey is he with yo?.
You're looking at a grand it parts if not more as its an S3 depending on how cheap you source them.
Jigging just to get an idea of the damage as words can't see :worthless:
-
^^^ (car d) from the op description it hasnt been dealt with by his insurance company,so this is where it won't carry the 'categorized' stigma.
if repaired properly no-one would be aware of any accident damage and he could ask for full price (assuming it's not cat D already) and if it is cat D usually the value is effected by upto 25%.
Either way it's not going to be a cheap fix,and you'll probably only get yourself a 'cheaper S3' that you'll never make or recoup any money on (break even)
Iv got no problem buying a cat d vehicle (currently own one) but I'd be pretty pissed off if I'd bought it and later found out it wasn't declared at sale (damaged and unregistered 'category) as this is usually where corners are cute,I can imagine there's a few out there
I wouldn't buy it to sell it, run keep and enjoy it yes
-
Anybody worth their salt could tell a hit that big. You've got rose tinted glasses on. Think about it logically, why would your mate not just do it himself?
-
^^^ Exactly :rolleye:
-
He's not a shy of a few quid and bought an 8v s3 within days of crashing this one and then literally left this sat there saying I'll get it sorted soon.
He is a good mate yes, I've known him years. He doesn't no anymore than I do about the damage. He's not a body repair man himself and he's not had anyone look at it.
I was thinking if it stands me at less than £10k all in then I'd be able to sell on for around £13k once repaired?
The car is completely hpi clear and isn't and won't ever be registered as a Cat C/D

Had a look on eBay at parts and so far I've come
Up with this:
Complete door £175
Wing £80
Curtain airbag £50
Tyres £90-100 each
Seat belt pre tensioner £50
There all genuine used parts. My body repair friend has quoted me around
£400 to do the paint (half price of what it would normally be with him)
-
Buy it :driver:
-
That's just a scratch that man!
You made it sound a lot worse, but it probably would of been Cat D (uneconomical repair) if he'd claimed on his insurance.
If/when you come to sell it,and your asked if its been in any accidents and repaired .Tell the truth!
-
Nah just tell him to sell me the engine :happy2:
-
You have pictures t prove the damage when it comes to sell :happy2:
-
You have pictures t prove the damage when it comes to sell :happy2:
^^^ this too,
Keep all receipts, and take pictures of work undertaken,
-
Cat D Normally means that something else other than the cost of repair such as the cost of the hire car while your car is off the road is too high so it's cheaper and quicker to pay out for the car
Cat C normally means that the cost to repair the damage is more than half the cost of the cars value or something like that
-
Even if it's written off as cat d you'll get loads of eyes on this if it's repaired proper :driver:
-
It's hpi clear and will remain clear as he hasn't and isn't claiming for the damage. He crashed it in September last year.
I just put the above info as someone previously wrote that if claimed against it would have been cat D.
-
Just to warn you that there may be some A post damage but nothing that can't be jigged out and from the prices and quote for paint you have I'd say you're in the money :jumpmove: if you do buy it.
-
Do it :happy2:
-
The pictures on this thread makes me sadz feels :sad1: :sad1: :chicken:
I hope he finds the OEM parts at as a low cost as you listed @Ricky123 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=13240), they look very fair - nothing 'Audi' is under £100
-
Well it looks an interesting project and looks possible to make money but how well have you checked for the damage and how accurate is your actual costings, rather than guessing?
I bought a Merc years ago under very similar circumstances and the cost of the air bag activation meant by the time I'd finished I could of bough a rough example as cheap and just got the paint work done.
-
For the price he is willing to let it go for I would be all over it as I work in a body shop. From where it has been hit you will want to try the new door and wing on to make sure it all fits pukka before paint as the A pillar might be in a little bit or the door hinges might be bent. Also you might need a new airbag module as it might not code with the new airbags.
-
Not worried about airbags or the panel damage. The only thing bothering me is if the pillar needs pulling.
I have enough knowledge to source the parts cheapish and I have vcds for Module coding etc
I'm going for a second look tomorrow. I'll post more pictures.
-
Sooo...
Went for a better look today. From what I can see the pillar looks fine. There's no marks or signs that anything has his it. The dents are on parts of the bodywork that aren't that strong to begin with. I'm 90% sure I could bolt a new door and Wing on and it will all line up very well without to much adjustment.
There's also a dent on the off side quarter, sent a pic over to a friend and he's quoted me £400 to do it.
I think I'm gonna get it. I'll no more threw the week. Got to try and sell a mk5 golf 1.6 fsi I have to make up the rest of the money too :signLOL:
-
Enjoy, I'm sure you'll turn it around and love the whole challenge.
Did you double check the roof for any creases cause I've know of cases where that's been enough to right off a motor for loss of structural soundness?
-
You'll be the fifth owner, that's a lot & would put me off buying any car, also the bonnet looks very dull, what's happened to that?
-
Just buy it fix it and keep it for a few years
-
I'll fill in the trade section of the v5 to save adding another keeper as I won't be keeping it. It's purely an investment.
The whole bodywork is dull as it's been sat near a tree and has got covered in crap. I rubbed a panel with a cloth and it shines underneath lol
I new the car pre accident anyway and it was absolutely immaculate. I remember going on it when he bought it and that's partly the reason I've got one.
I've checked over everything I could really, roof, underneath etc etc
We even went to where he had the accident and he talked me threw what happened. He's not desperate to sell the car, he's far from pushing a sale, he has a rough idea on what it will cost him to repair and what he'd sell it for afterwards but he just can't be bothered with it all.
I no if it turned out to be a nightmare and it had something really wrong with it then I could take it back to him anyway. Only reason he's offered it me is because he no's me and no's that if there's money to be made on a car then I'm always interested lol
There's nothing set in stone at the moment but I'm still like 90% sure I will be getting it.
Just got to also some how explain to the other half that I've not advertised or sold my current car to down grade to get our own place and that I've actually gone and bought another :signLOL: that should be fun :fighting:
I'll keep the post updated on what happens. I'm also hoping to be back in a mk5 gti by this time next year too! Actually can't wait to be back in one of my all time favourite cars, the Mrs will think it's a downgrade but I won't.
-
Well I've bought it
I'm leaving it where it is for a couple of weeks, just gonna put it on axle stands, remove the Hub and front wheels then go back with a new hub and pumped up wheels and hopefully drive it home. I'll try post some pics when I do this.
-
nice one :jumpmove:
-
Just thought I'd update this post.
Got the car home now. I drove it back :happy2:
So far I've replaced the hub, driveshaft and track rod to make it driveable. I got chance to give this inside a clean today. The top half of the nearside door had come out leaving a gap and the inside had been getting wet. It was absolutely covered in Mold! I stripped all the seats out and have really gone to work cleaning it.
The carpet is knackered due to it getting damp so I've sourced one from a breaker for £50 which I'll hopefully get this week.
I'll try get some pics and put them on. Struggling for time at the minute, doing agency work so I'm not spending much time at home :fighting: but we've all got to do it ay!

-
You done a very good job mate
Looks new in there :happy2:
-
That's minging lol but you've done well to clean it all :happy2:
-
Thanks guys. Picked a mint carpet up today too so should have that in soon. It doesn't look half as bad on the pics as it actually was lol
-
That's horrendous. Well done on getting it so clean again.
-
Good work mate :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:
-
Another quick update...
Fitted a pretty much mint second hand carpet
Replaced the curtain airbag
Bought a door which came complete and in the same colour
Bought a pair of wings which aren't the right colour but there genuine
Bought both front seat belts as the pretensioners had gone off
Bought a new seat airbag and sent the seat away to have it fitted and repaired
The interior brushed aluminium parts have suffered with white worm corrosion from the Mold so I'm getting them hydro dipped in carbon as the sets on eBay are quite expensive, if they don't look right then I'll sell them and buy the original parts.
That's all for now. Hopefully have the inside back together soon and then crack on with the exterior. Struggling for time abit lately with work but I'll get there. Will try and get some more pics on too.
-
A lot of people wrap the interior trim. Usually works really well and should hide the corrosion.
-
Well done mate its coming along nicely :happy2:

Starting to come together nicely!
If I were you I'd upgrade to the MY11 smaller door mirrors. I think they look much nicer than the dumbos.
-
Not been on here for a while! Had a "off" on my motorbike which left me in abit of a bad way for a couple of months.
Anyway thought I'd update this thread with what pics I have of the car during repair and the finished product.

In the end it wasn't as profitable as I'd hoped but I still made a profit. Had it for sale for months on eBay and auto trader and didn't really get any interest. I actually ended up selling it to a local Evans halshaw garage after seeing one of there we buy cars type adverts.
-
Sorry to hear about our bad experienceand hope you're all fighting back again. I hate bikes :signLOL:
Looking well nice mate.
Was the geometry out once all fitted up and test driven?.
-
Cheers mate, all good now and just bought another bike lol I'll never learn.
And No it actually wasn't, took it for alignment and everything was fine.
-
Good to know you've sorted and sold it. :happy2:
I still don't like bikes :signLOL:
