Title: Sounds like top mounts, but isn't! (suspension rattle)
Post by: Adam2112 on March 07, 2016, 12:36:25 pm
My TDI 140 has an annoying suspension rattle. I've had the car for a year and I bought it with the rattle. A year later it's not got any worse but it's about time I get it sorted.

To me, it sounds like a knackered top mount, the rattle occurs going over smallish bumps in the road, when doing maybe 15-40mph. But not all of the time.

However the top mounts are fine.

I've had a play with the bushes on the lower arm and they are all fine.

The previous owner suggested it was a "lower gearbox bush", but the rattle doesnt occur with engine braking or anything speed/load related.

The car handles absolutely fine and I've done approx 5k on it and it's not got any worse.

Is there any change it could be the "lower gearbox bush"?

I think this would be the "POWERFLEX ENGINE MOUNT DOG BONE BUSH KIT VW GOLF MK5 DIESEL" I've found on ebay. £50 isn't throw away money for me so would appreciate your thoughts!

Cheers

Checked for play in the Anti roll bar links?

Yeah, there's no play in anything I can reach under the car.

It's on the drivers side, and I cannot feel anything through the steering wheel or gearbox when it happens.

cheers

I'm having a similar problem with my mk2 Leon Cupra (same suspension etc) went into the garage today for drop links but they said the ones fitted are fine, it's an annoying jingling metal rattle as op described. Be good to find out any suggestions!

Could well be a stone nut bolt other stuck down behind the battery?.
