Title: MK5 GTI Wet front passenger footwell :(
Post by: fazi123 on March 09, 2016, 03:18:22 pm
Hi guys,

I've owned my MK5 just over a month now and I've noticed the front passenger footwell gets really wet when it rains. I've checked the drains under the scuttle panel and they are clear and I also had them checked by my mechanic too.

My car has a sunroof and Im not sure if the drains are blocked but theres no water on the headliner / A pillar. I previously checked the pollen filter and it was clean / dry so the water is not coming from there.

It is definitely rain water and not coolant.

Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks,
Faz

Door seals? Get a air blower in the sunroof seal to make sure there not blocked up.

Would something like this work for the sunroof drain?

http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p80592?table=no

I'm certain its a blockage and not a break in the pipe / connections as there are no leaks anywhere aside from the place where the foot rests.

The best thing and cheapest is to use strimmer line and poke it down all the sunroof holes .....this will clear any blockage

Don't be too certain. My break was at the top of the dash yet I only found water under the accelerator. It dripped down behind the plastic trim and pooled there.

Start by taking up the carpet and drying it out then remove the pillars. Not a big job!

Thanks Andy - I don't think its the door seals.... I thought that was only a problem on the mk4's / leons of that vintage.

I'm due a trip down to you guys once all this is resolved tho! :)

Thanks Amanda, I've just tried this, and have managed to get the strimmer line quiet far down the drain, but I cannot see it come out the other end. I also poured some water in just to see if I could see any coming out, but I couldn't see any of that either. I guess its all gone down underneath my carpet! :(

Thanks for your advice Luke. I appreciate it. I've booked it into a mechanic for Saturday as I don't feel like ripping the carpet / headliner out on my front drive!

After a long time pouring water over various parts of the exterior I eventually found mine was caused by a leak from the top corner of the windscreen. A new screen fixed it.
It could be a number of things but you will need to strip back interior trim to see where its coming in. Quite a hassle!

Has the car had any welding because if it has the plastic drains could have been sealed up stopping the water from draining.
