I've clocked 150 and could have gone more?.
-
160 though I can't remember if it was before or after the map
-
Lol @The666 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11928) come on :slap: wake up :signLOL:

and where did you hit that speed?
-
Coming off the M1 just before Daventry and it was a hill going down so that definitely helped.
-
We went for eurotrip last December and clocked 160mph when we were in Germany.
Stock GTI but it was not GPS speed.
-
Indicated and actual are two very different things at those speeds.........
Downhill doesn't count either!!!! :signLOL:
-
Tut tut that's jail time
-
Don't these have a limiter when stock?
Not that you really need to go past the limiter unless you on the autobahn
Too many speedbumps, camera's and police around anyway
-
On paper a standard GTI maxes out at 146mph
-
With only 197hp as standard its not going to need a limiter as it will only reach an actual 146mph (on a flat road!!)
-
The only motorway I really go on is m25 and I daren't go above 80ish. I'm within first two years of driving so no leniency with me!
-
A gazillion mph.
Why does it matter? It doesn't take any skill to drive fast in a straight line and it's frankly dangerous on public roads.
I'm way more into the twisty turny stuff.

+1
Also, admitting doing those speeds on a public road, on an internet forum... :stupid:
-
I don't know and I'd need to drive to Germany to find out. Even on track the longest straight was too short to reach top speed.
-
Top end is irrelevant to me, Its all about 30-50MPH, 30-70MPH etc....In gear performance where you actually need it for 99% of the driving you do on the roads.
Anything over 100MPH on public roads is not wise or safe.

agree. twisty roads are soo much more fun. motorway just puts me to sleep I'd rather be a passenger after the first 10 minutes of a motorway drive.

I'm not sure it's admissible in court without corroborating evidence, but yeah, probably not wise to announce such things publically!
As for 150mph, no chance where I live. 90-100 tops and only for a few seconds.
I hate to think what mapped Edition 30s are capable of. 170ish?

Just curious to know what's the top end limit that's all.

Is there any place in the UK where you can actually test your top speed? Like an airstrip or something similar?

You can go over to isle of man no speed limit there :driver:
-
Sure there are probably abandoned airfields around you could do it on.
-
I'm not sure how accurate the speedo is on my golf, I had a GPS with over 8 satellites & there was near on a 10 mph difference! I did have a feeling 80mph felt slow for 80mph.
I got caught speeding last year, I never do over 100 any more now, far too risky, plus so many other fools on the road, imagine some tw@t doing 50mph dawdling along & your speed testing at 150+??
-

if you know any abandoned airfields near London or anywhere in the UK please let us know. There probably is but its still gonna be gated and no access.
-
Go off the speedo reading if I was you, not your GPS speed.
Speedo reading will give you measurement at the wheels.

Fairly certain there are two or three in East Midlands area. Abingdon is one that springs to mind
-
Theres one where VMAX is held in leicestershire but dont think thats possible for us to use :sad1:
-
Bruntingthorpe has a long runway where vmax events are held. Gti international was there for a few years
My mapped Pirelli goes through the 10mph increments crazy fast well into 3 figures
-
Langer airfield
-
Maybe we can have a forum meet there :signLOL:

Most mk5's read 5-7% under on the speedo. So 150mph is probably more like 142-143mph. But of course when you said M1 you actually meant private road right :happy2:
-
Just to confirm there were no cars on that stretch when I got there as I'm :stupid: but not that stupid to be doing it around other stupid people jumping out in front of me and no time to stop. clear road ahead he says :happy2:
I always do a one off test and won't do it again sorry :sad1:

So what would you say the correct speed for 57 mph is?.
Air strip where they allow stupidity for the :stupid: people :happy2: :driver:

Better off taking a trip to the Nurburgring!

Or a UK trackday. Cheaper than you might think; lots of them available for about £150, or even less. The car only really *needs* some good brake fluid, and if the rest of the consumables/liquids are OK you're good to go. Of course the car will be better on track with brake upgrades, more power, better suspension, stiffer chassis, good tyres etc but they're not absolute musts to get out there.
Bruntingthorpe has been mentioned - that has a massive 2 mile straight, and a more twisty section. You still wouldn't get it to 150mph though
-
I've had 155 on the clock, whatever that is in real life I'm not sure.

How is that proven as I was done by a speed camera a year ago and they only convicted me 6 weeks ago the bastarfs :slap: I used the same M1 passed Northamptonshire stretch where the camera are yet I don't know how I got to 57 mph and tried to be honest but the dogs threw the book at me and this is the first time I've had points in 15 years.

I thought they had to send the NIP within two weeks?

Yes did but when i said I wanted a court hearing they gave me a late hearing.

All analogue speedos over compensate, can you imagine the manufacturer comeback if it states you were doing 40 and were caught doing 43?
Plus, move your head up and down slightly and you will see a different reading due to the needle being interpreted differently.
