Title: Copious Amounts of White Grease on Hinges?
Post by: Juliand on March 19, 2016, 01:58:36 pm
As above really....My car (two weeks in now) has lots of this stuff on door hinges and boot hinges. It's sooo tempting to get a cloth on it to give it a cleaner look, but it's obviously there for the purpose of lubing / protecting the hinges from rust etc. Anyone else seen this? Might try to get a pic or two up

Thoughts, please....

Cheers

Wipe it off. If it's not in the hinge then it's not doing anything.

As above give it a good  clean, it will only start collecting dirt and look horrible.

 Don't wipe it off! Its the proper VW grease for the roller part of the hinge! The dealer applies this from following the manufacturer service manual!

That picture is quite special - so much grease everywhere, except on the actual pin on the hinge, which looks rusty & dry. Good old VW dealers. Blasting this stuff out to make it look like they've done something...

As others have said - just wipe off the excess.  It annoys me when they do it!  Just attracts dirt over time making things worse.

As long as the bits which move/rub together are greased there's no issue.
