Title: Funny Tapping noise from near side wheel.
Post by: Greenman on March 21, 2016, 02:36:21 pm
Hey all.

I have a funny tapping/chattering/rattling noise coming from the nearside front wheel.

It's bloody annoying and gets worse and faster as i speed up.

It sounds like a stone in the tyre but i can't see one at all.

Any other ideas what this could be?

It has to be something to do with the wheel as it increases with speed.

Off to get it on a ramp later but just wanted to see if there was anything i could check beforehand?

TIA.

Check if you have a trapped stone between the disc and the dust shield. Other than that I can only guess to be the wheel bearing.

I managed to sneak off work and get it to a garage.

Turns out it was a sheered bolt on the drive shaft that had become flat but was still attached to the shaft, and the bit of metal from the bolt was hitting against the gearbox!

All fixed now...:)

Though i do now only have 5 bolts on the drive shaft.  Getting a new one asap.

1st time I read about this fault. :surprised:

Where I live there's no ice and salt on the roads. That helps to prevent rust.
