With all the cold weather should I expect better mpg from my car? If i'm right in thinking colder air is more dense and should lead to better combustion and therefore more miles per tank how come all other things being the same I'm down 5 mpg. Can air be too cold? What'd you reckon?
-
Your logic is sound but as its so cold it takes a lot longer for engine to get up to temperature and consequently is running rich for longer trying to get itself warm. Gives with one hand and takes with the other...
-
As above, plus if its anything like here its taking twice as long to get to work due to the traffic and therefore my car is idling longer
-
Also you usually have more things turned on e.g. heated seat, heated rear window, heater turned on to a higher setting which uses more juice.
-
If it's any consolation my mpg has plummeted. Probably, because of everything running together: heated seats, heated wing mirrors and washer jets, rear windscreen defroster, and obviously the heater...
I've also noticed the car takes ages to heat up idling...you really need to start moving for it to heat up properly...and I guess whilst the engine hasn't heated up to it's proper level - the cars running on choke.
-
my MPG has plummetted as well in this weather, and has been lower than normal for the last couple months
-
Me too, struggling to hit 300 miles to tank on all my short journeys. Our Cooper s struggles to hit 260 miles to the same amount of fuel at the moment. 560 miles to £110 is not good
-
Cheers guys that explain its. I'm loving the cold and snow but the commute and mpg's killing the bank balance.
-
Thought id bump this thread up rather than starting a new one.
I got my GTi around Christmas time and got just under 400 miles to my last tank.
I do a 5 mile round trip to work daily, plus 30miles to the airport every friday and the same back on a monday morning.
I dont drive hard all the time, but not like a total granda either. Up to the airport on friday i averaged 36.2mpg at 80mph, but managed 46.8mpg last week when i drove 20 miles across city through traffic and at 50mph or so on dual carriageways. I would usually sit at 65 on the way to the airport and average 42 or so.
To be honest, those figures are FAR better than i ever expected to get from a GTI, and its the winter.
A mate has a DSG and he averages 33mpg and 330 miles to a tank.
Are other folk achieving similar figures to me?
-
I've no idea at all how many miles I do to a tankful but my display shows I usually get 30-32 mpg on any journey of 100 miles plus, and I drive my DSG 95% of the time in Manual (even M'ways) and I use the gears a lot. If the journey involves lots of B-road twisties my mpg will drop in direct ratio to my enjoyment.
I haven't noticed my mpg change seasonally.
-
I have a DSG and i have it in Drive most of the time and im lucky if it goes above 29.9!

That does sound very very good. I do a similar commute, about 5 miles each way though. Half through town, half on a fast DC and my average is around 25 mpg at the moment, gets closer to 30 in the summer. Engine isn't up to the proper temp these days on the commute.
On long trips if you stay at a steady speed it is surprisingly economical. Best I got (mostly as I was stuck in a convoy on roads I couldn't overtake was ...

^^^^
How on earth do some people get as much as 40 mpg!?
Even with a sick turbo and my Revo switched to 'Stock' and staying in D all the time and not giving any sudden throttle, I still only managed 35 mpg IIRC.
-
The best I've managed is 44mpg, the pic below is a 74 mile journey from a full tank with a range of 415 miles so 487 from the tank if i kept going :happy2: See how little the needle has moved, not getting more than 35mpg on runs in this weather though - usually closer to 32mpg :sad1:

RR, I can get 40+mpg by staying at 60mph on cruise control, 6th gear.
Going at say 80mph, I'd get 30-35mpg.

....If conditions are right, I'm normally around 75-80 with the traffic flow and in Manual-mode and I never ever use Cruise Control even though my car has it.
I'm happy enough if I see 30 mpg but not fussed if I'm around 27/28.
22 mpg on unrestricted German autobahns :jumpmove:
-
I get about 32mpg per tank according to trip 2 which I always re-set when I fill up, which is meaning about 360-370 out of a tank of 98-99. Round town it varies from 25-29 mpg generally always in D, but with climate, heated seats, and I guess the xenons will suck up a little more juice as well.
But I will say ive only had the car 2 months, so I am still enjoying pressing the happy pedal, every time the engines warmed up
One thing I have noticed is that I put Shell V power in the last 2 tanks and at 80 the computer shows a 2-3mpg improvement or tesco 99 needle at 78-79 on cruise in D mode, not sure if this is the sign of a better fuel, or just change in atmospheric conditions?
-
most i have ever seen was 47.7 on a trip from manchester to brighton and i get this on a regular basis on that long trip...funnily enough i get 38mpg on the way back up :signLOL:
the least being 12.2mpg
my average is around....19/20
i dont drive my car to work, i get to drive it about twice a week...so when i get in it i never feel like a gental cruise haha.
-
most i have ever seen was 47.7 on a trip from manchester to brighton
 ... and I thought 41.7 was bl00dy good!!
Long term I'm at 26.7, but I do really short trips Mon-Fri and I'm usually too impatient/running late to do the '60 in 6th' thing on a motorway.
It has to be said though, if MPG is your thing, buy a diseasel....
-
I saw 40's once in my Stg2 GTI but too be honest it was boring
Managed 59.9 in the remapped mk4 25th Anniversary once - rubbish busy roads with average speed cameras made it a slow journey - about 130miles in the end.
My 5-6mile trip out in the new Golf R today say 13mpg

Your in trouble when she reads that.
And i have quoted it now so you cant remove your post. :P
Misses ED you have a PM.
-
I'm not worried at all, as everyone knows its all up hill on the way back :p
-
Ahah why would I be bothered? We both know my mpg is worse than that :D

Yey :jumpmove: another ED and his Misses domestic. (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftomashandmilly%2FDaft_stuff%2Fb8r77m.gif&hash=114df3a049a84d1f4d348e7fb2e54c3508423aeb) :signLOL:

My GTI has DSG and I usually get about 300 to 330 miles to a tank. The best I have got is about 400 and 35 MPG on a long trip abroad. I cannot get near VW official figures usually.

quick response, nothing quite as fancy as some other 'reviews'.
-
since It got cold I noticed the MPG gone down about 2-3mpg on my work journey
-
since its been cold my mpg has dropped a good 3-4mpg. most i have ever seen is 41.3mpg :driver: most boring drive of my life!!!

....I'd hate that! Could the feature be switched off do you know?

Its only in the top right hand of the MFD - not that bad, lots of info on there now mind you.
-
So not to take this thread further off-topic I'm gonna reply in your R thread, neg.

I regularly get about 35 mpg average over a tank of V-Power from my DSG GTI, usually leave it in D but with the occasional foray into Manual :)
My commute is about 43/44 miles each way with about 30 miles on Dual Carriageway / Motorway and the rest on a nice twisty road...
Lowest I've seen on the commute was around 26-27 indicated after some spirited driving on the way home.... (MPG only ever suffers on the way home... can't think why...)
Don't really notice seasonal fluctuations too much...
-
Hmm
I get 400-420 out of a tank in summer and I'm getting 360-ish at the moment - full on heated seats, 23degrees on the blowers and lights there and back. B-roads averaging about 40mph to and from work 13 miles away.
It does 7mpg on track...
-
:scared:
something must be up with mine then, high 20s is all i see maybe the last owner used 95 and the car is still adapting to the 99 i put in. Ill give it a month and if dont see any improvement ill change the spark plugs............................and a remap
-
Hi guys
The colder it gets the worse the fuel gets for a few reasons.
The intake air temp sensor picks up on all this nice cold air in winter and advances the timing while putting in a bit more fuel hence the drop in MPG.
The cars go well though :happy2:

So come the summmer i could be getting MPG figures in the 50's!?
-
I doubt the GTI can get into the 50's.
If you can do it, you need to look into getting a Micra.
-
im lucky to get into the late 20'sat the min. im running 99ron but only had the car a month
-
I reckon I could hit 50mpg over 150miles
-
Thought i`d put mine on to
I get 27-30 average and the best i have had it up to 40mpg but driving like i`m 70!!! :driver:
needless to say it didn`t stay at 40mpg for long.
Not that worried about mpg other wise i`d buy a diesel! :signLOL:
-
My route to work takes me along the M11 southbound for most of the journey - bear in mind the M11 southboard between the M25 and A406 is mainly slightly downhill.
In the summer I once hit 46mpg on that stretch, but I believe that was helped by the very slight downhill gradient.
I cannot believe 50mpg is possible in a GTI - no way at all - unless you get out and push it!
-
im not so sure, i think if i tried a bit harder on my long trip i could have got up there, DanGB has seen 50's in his car with a big turbo!
-
i get 26 currently (schools off) otherwise its 23!!!
-
Up until recently I used v_power and was getting about 28 mph on a 25 mile round trip to work. Recently due to finances I've been using regular 95 octave fuel and managed about 30 mph on the same trip. Recently covered about 400 miles in two trips on regular and managed to get it up to about 35 but know matter how smooth and fuel conscious I was it never got wany higher. Eventually I got bored and ended up with about 30 mph overall. How people get into the forties ill never know (lots of coasting) !

it doesn't matter if you coast it only records your mpg when its got a figure on the screen, if its --- it doesnt effect your average!
-
...How people get into the forties ill never know (lots of coasting) !
Its a common misconception that coasting (slipping it into neutral) saves petrol. When in neutral, the engine is obviously disconnected from the wheels (simplified), so fuel is used to maintain tickover, whereas when a gear is engaged the flywheel/crank/associated components are being turned by the wheels.
Cant quote the mk5, but the injectors are completely closed at 0 throttle when the revs are over 1700rpm on my mk2 (EFI).
Im sure this has probably been repeated a million times so sorry as im still new to the forum!
-
^^^ Ed, '---' is live consumption, if you kept it in the average calc screen the mpg would probably increase.
Re coasting... Proper Coasting is no throttle IN GEAR. Neutral uses fuel to keep idling, so run down the gearbox in gear to maximise mpg...
In terms of economy, I'm pleased if I get into the 30's.
My All-time high is 41.7 on a motorway, how people can achieve over 50 I don't know, but to be honest, how can you be having any GTi-esque fun whilst trying to achieve 50+ mpg..?

i have tested it, several times (im rather sad) and "---" doesn't change the average from what i saw
-
After a few long runs this weekend ive done 274miles with just under half a tank remaining. The computer says 225 miles left.
I have been driving like a big girl in a 1.6 though.
Strangely the mpg figure didnt average as high as it has in the past, only 41- dont really understand why.
-
Forget what the trips telling you and work it out from the next time you fill up. A 383 mile round trip and the computer said 37. 6 mpg...after filling up and calculated it worked out to be 35.3 mpg. Admittedly not too far off but off still the same.
How many litres does the tank hold anyway...thought it was 55 but my light came on and it took 49 litres to fill.
50 mpg from a gti not a chance :rolleye:
-
Mmm, I average 29mpg on an 8mile each way commute in town traffic. Not too bad. Ive only owned the car since its been cold so Im glad it should get slightly better. I drove the length of thr country in December with -14deg showing and it was 400miles to a tank.
On this has anyone seen an increase or decrease after the car was remapped? I suspect slightly less.
-
Have heard that Revo 2/2+ can increase fuel consumption, but not sure how much by.
-
I'm Stage 2+ and if I have cruise control on, sitting on the motorways I can see in the 40's. Best I have seen was mid 40's when going round the M25 (SPECS 50 zone) - recorded over an 80 mile journey. My daily commute to work is 30 miles and I see 30mpg and that's enjoying msyelf.
-
.
My best has been 33mpg on a recent 90 mile journey staying in D-mode the whole time and revs no more than about 3,200 < Very boring quite frankly. Otherwise I usually see about 28, sometimes 26, and less if in Europe without such speed restrictions. I never ever use cruise control - I hate it! I'm Revo2 and don't believe what's said about improved fuel consumption on the 2.0T FSI engine.
-
EDD the "---" definitely registers on the consumption, and I see my 1 and 2 computer figures increase when it shows. What the computer is showing is the value is too small to be calculated it will still register the distance travelled with a close to zero fuel usage.
If what you said were true sitting in traffic with the engine running with "---" displayed on the instant consumption would also not be registered and I'm sure we can all agree that the average consumption drops with the engine running when stationery.
-
Since I got the PDT remap, I'm gettin 260 miles out of a tank, which works out at 25.6mpg :stupid:
Thats driving around normally, no traffic jams or much town driving either :sad1:
-
14.5mpg when having a bit of a blast and settling down to 21.5mpg when being light footed. Mind you it's an 18 year old 3.9 V8 so all in not too bad really :P

^^^ :signLOL: it's a classic Range Rover which has been in my street for the last 10 years and I've always loved the look of it. Came up for sale last week and I thought 'I'm having that'! Nothing fancy about it just a 'classic' of it's time. Looking forward to getting it down Salisbury plain and about 4mpg then  Broke my karcher washing it today so will put a few pics up in due course.

....Ah, a good mate of mine had one of those first Range Rovers when they came out. They were considered to be something very special and different at the time. I loved the sound of the V8. :notworthy:
-
I was quite impressed with my mpg from the trip to work today, a mixture of b roads and dual carriageways, with 3 miles @ 50mph speed restriction on which I kept a steady 50mph in 6th gear, this gave me 37.2mpg at the end of the trip! :congrats:
-
Been 'driving miss daisy' :innocent: recently to see the best I can get out of car (purely an experiment not a lifestyle choice!) just put 40litres in and had done 281miles by my reckoning (quite happy to be corrected maths not my strongest suit) that 31.9mpg. Won't be doing that again
