Ive just gone stage 2 super chips on my e30 with bcs 200 cell exhaust system.goes well with no problems.is the original filter a restriction if new and Genuine vw.am tempted to fit an intake kit.any advice on a good fitting kit ?

It's not that restrictive. But you can help the flow a bit with a good intake. Revo, Ramair and ITG are decent.

You'll get no more mass air with an intake if the filter inside the oem box is kept free of restriction for a oem K03. I've seen and compared log data and no more mass air was shown...and I've seen rolling road results showing the intake and exhaust are sufficient for off-the-shelf tunes.
Three pulls done for each step:
A base line was done on the RR...
Then it was stage 2 tuned and put on the RR again for a new base...
Intake was added and the RR results were the same...
Downpipe was added and the RR results still the same.

I'm currently at stage 2 with 330 BHP and OEM airbox with an ITG panel filter. The airbox isn't restricting the tune according with my tuner. It's making 1,5 bar of peak boost and 1,4 bar of stable boost.

Hoping for some recommendations for intake kit. I'm happy with car performance and sound. Original is cracked and I don't want new oem intake. My car is mapped. I don't want it to be too loud. Bit louder than original is ok. Cheers.

If you don't like a loud filter I'd say go for an enclosed filter kit.

Only decent priced enclosed one what I have found is Forge wintake, but some people say it's loud. VWR is quiet, but costs pretty much.

Also it seems discounted.
Does anyone have experiences of pipercross venom intake kit?

Personally I would go with something like this as the venom will be very close to the water hoses but your choice of course.
The Ramair filter kit comes with a heat shield that looks a lot better than mine as I had two kits in one. Neuspeed P-flow pipe and a Ramair filter. sounded like darth vader but amazing.

The RamAir seems ok. I'll probaply buy one. So over sized one or normal kit? Only changes made to my golf are remap and S3 intercooler. Turbo is k03.

Over sized means more breathing and most likely a lot louder as I had the biggest one they sold :signLOL:
Choose carefully if you don't like too much noise :happy2:

Oversized every time.
Think of it like blowing/sucking through a straw...... The skinny one is the equivalent of sucking on a really long thin straw... Lots of effort needed to shift a small amount of air....... With a larger diameter straw you shift a lot more air with a lot less effort...... The less effort wasted here the better, especially on a small framed turbo that runs at 100% of its capability once tuned.
I'd also recommend getting your money back for the Superchips sh*te and getting a proper tune done, whether it be generic from the likes of Revo, APR etc. or a live map from the likes of R-Tech etc.
Any of them will be a LOT better than the Superchips/Bluefin sh*te

i think the thing with the oversized kit. it downsizes right before the MAF sensor to the same size as the normal kit anyway so surely thats defeating the point ?

I stand corrected - dans hit the nail on the head. Just thought I'd saw somewhere that K04 needs oversized, that might be where I got confused.

It has to downsize for the MAF to maintain the correct scaling. It also reduces further to get in to the turbo which has an inlet of around 60mm from memory. This is beneficial as the reduction (if gradual and tapered nicely) increases air velocity in to the turbo. The issue is the length of the narrow section - Think back to the 1.8T days and the huge turbo intake pipes that were developed and the gains they produced - the best performing ones all had the same thing in common..... The diameter was a lot larger than OEM until as close to the turbo as possible before tapering down to the size of the turbo inlet....
Another example with straws..... :signLOL:
Blow/suck through one and see how difficult it is: Oversize example (you can add a larger diameter one too if you like to simulate the larger diameter section of the pipe, but the effect will be minimal as the restriction is the length at the smaller ID (70mm)
Then:
Stick 3 or 4 of them together (much longer length at the smaller ID diameter - equivalent to the 70mm smaller/non-oversize version) and see how much more difficult it is...... The shorter the restrictive part is the better.

If interested though guys there's a wealth of info on the web in terms of fluid dynamics and frictional losses. I'm no physics expert but the basic principles are easy enough to understand :happy2:

Correction: My car doesn't have Superchip. Software is from Finnish company called Turbotec.
