Title: URGENT - Ticking/Rattling noise coming from engine
Post by: usman89 on April 13, 2016, 09:27:57 pm
Hi Guys

I have this weird noise coming from the engine, really annoying as I just bought the car last week. Its a 2006 GTI DSG and has covered 116k miles. Rather than me describing the noise, I have posted two links below, one recorded from the engine bay and one from the bottom of the car.

I took it to two independent VW specialists, and they both said they have no idea and only way to diagnose (and fix) the problem would be to take the engine apart and charge an hourly late. If I leave the noise as it is, would anything happen to the engine ? The car drives and pulls perfectly fine.

Many thanks

Have a read here and look up other threads on the chain fitted to these engines

Thanks for that. I've seen many different posts about the issue. Still confused whether I should get the chain and tensioner done only or also get the adjustor replaced too. I read somewhere of a complete kit, anyone got a link for that ?

Thanks

Thanks for that, sounds awful what happened. How can I avoid this ?

If I take it to a garage, they won't have an idea where to begin and start charging crazy prices per hour just taking engine apart. Where is the cheapest place to get chain and tensioner ?

Update

I have just realised my engine is 06 BWA

Do I need to do anything different from the advice highlighted above ?

Not really. It look at this http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,106158.0.html

Parts from TPS for me but EBay sell it all if you want it cheaper.

My chain snapped. I procrastinated replacing the chain when I thought it sounded diesely and it cost me! Do some more research into whether or not this is your issue, and then do the swap. Its up to you whether you get the adjuster as well, I dont want to advise on that, but some have fixed the noise without replacing the adjustor and some havnt.

@doylebros (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6153) I tried TPS but they seem quite expensive, to give an ideal, I enquired about air and oil filter, oil and spark plugs and they gave me a total of £130!  :signLOL:

@Peskyjones (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11854) Yeah mate, I've been following your thread, such a shame but glad you got it resolved in the end. How can I go about checking if this is the issue ? All my research points towards this issue, i.e. fine on cold idle, as soon as it warms up, it starts to sound like a diesel.

As far as im aware the only symtpon of a failing or wearing cam chian/ tensioner is the diesel noise when warm.

If possible find someone who has replaced their cam chain near to you so that can give you a second opinion. What area are you in?

I am in Glasgow but willing to travel to someone nearby to get a second opinion. I know you bought yours for only £30 from eBay, how is that working out in terms of quality ?

Seems ok... I'm hoping it is genuine. Others seem to think so. I messaged the seller and they said they had bought it off someone and ended up not needing it, but they were sold it as genuine.

Thats good news. I am going to order one tonight, do you know if it is the same for BWA engine ? Appreciate your help.
