Hello people! Just a quick question.. had my gti just over 6 months now and I'm really considering to go stage 1. It's a 2005 dsg, fully stock with just a res delete.
I'm based in West Yorkshire can anyone recommend anyone around these neck of the wood for a stage 1. Also wanted to know what else would I need to do for the map apart from the replacing the standard DV? If anything.
Finally what can I expect in terms of performance and will it also enhance the sound? Should I go stage 1 custom?
Thanks :)

Oh and one more thing. The car has covered just over 93k but is runs very well with no concerns and dsg is running smooth too. Will a stage 1 compromise this? Could I potentially face any mechanical issues?

R-Tech. They're in Hinckley in Leicestershire, so maybe a little trek for you, but people travel there from all corners of the country. They're pretty much regarded as the best TFSI mappers about.
Get an oem revision G dv. Make sure the pcv and cam follower are healthy.
Yes, you'll hear the turbo boosting more.
R-Tech maps are fully custom, so you'll get the best output from your hardware. Depending on your budget it'd be worthwhile getting a couple of things done before you go down.
The biggest restriction to take care of is the exhaust. The cheapest way of improving that is a pre cat delete. If you're flush, a full exhaust with decat or sports cat and bigger downpipe is ideal - you'll create loads more flow and reduce egt's, which means more boost can safely be mapped in. Pre cat delete is good, as it removes some restriction, but until you get a bigger downpipe it's still restricted considerably.
If you're after noise, a decent intake like Revo, ITG or Ramair will tick that box, as well as improving flow. The standard airbox isn't anywhere near as much of a restriction as the exhaust, but it'll give you a bit more power.
Then you're into the realms of an upgraded fuel pump, intercooler etc. You'll gain loads of mid range with an uprated pump. Better IC will aid flow and keep things cooler.

As for reliability, as long as it's looked after with the right oil at the right intervals etc, it'll be fine.
Only when you're up to Stage 2+ (all the mods listed above) will things get a bit iffy. You're effectively maxing out the turbo.

Thanks for the detailed reply AJP!
Yeah I've heard good things of Rtech and if it's worth the trip then I'm deffo willing to travel there!
Just in regards to creating more flow and stuff, I don't know if I fancy a full exhaust, I guess I don't want my gti to be overly loud but sound purposeful and the gear change noise louder on the dsg tranny. Plus with a house purchase going through i have to be careful with the pennies!
So do you reckon I can get away with just a pre-cat delete and downpipe? Also should I get that done before so I can avoid the engine management light? Or does it not matter? I've read previously it can be mapped out ?
How much would a air filter set me back? I guess for stage 1 you don't need that many mods although the more the better to make the most of it!
However I'm just looking for that extra boost/power and slight sound factor without breaking the bank, so I probably won't be looking to upgrade the IC and so on.

Upgrading the downpipe takes the pre cat out of the equation anyway, as that's the section of exhaust that the downpipe replaces.
It's really down to cost. Pre cat delete would be the cheapest. Then a bit more expensive is a decat downpipe (you'll fail your mot with a decat). Then a sport cat downpipe (fine for mot). Then a full exhaust.
You're looking at 200-300 quid for one of the better intakes, and I'd strongly argue that you'd be better putting that money towards doing the exhaust properly instead.
People get good results doing the pre cat delete then getting a Stage 1 R-Tech map. That'll be the cheapest option for you, and you should see 250bhp and 310lb/ft minimum, as well as a slightly deeper exhaust tone and slightly louder dsg burps.
I would only go for a decat downpipe over a sport cat downpipe if you had a 'friendly mot tester' or were prepared to swap the standard cat and downpipe back in before every mot.
I waited, and saved up for a full turbo back exhaust with sport cat, and I'm glad I did.

Have a read of this, it should answer a few questions:

If you don't want to spend a fortune, you'd be best getting a decat downpipe before taking it for mapping. These can be had on eBay for the £200 ish mark and will have the biggest bang for your buck once Niki @ R-Tech maps your car. A panel filter (£25-30ish) may also help a little

This should be a sticky as type of thread gets opened every other week!

I considered this myself early on, but didn't want the mot hassle. I personally think if you're going to the bother of swapping downpipes you might as well get your hand in your pocket and get a full turbo back with a proper cat.
I'm really glad I waited.
Just hinges on whether the op is doing a real budget build or not. If so, pre cat delete. If not, do it reet.
