Title: Battery flat, quick help please
Post by: Nasir on January 13, 2010, 11:43:49 am
Tried to start the car up and the battery's definitely gone now, could tell it was on its way out being an 04 plate (not a GTI) with no battery change previously. I've got a booster pack, will that be ok? Just need to get down to halfords. Car is a manual by the way.

Thanks

I'll give it a go 182 Blue, Halfords are saying they can't do it now because the car will lock itself out due to  the immobiliser. Is that true? Waiting for a call back from VW and a specialist.

....

The oem battery usually lasts around 3-4 years. It'll recharge itself when it gets low if you use the car regularly and often but once it starts to get tricky on startup it's best to change it to a new one. Get a VW one - They're good and have a decent warranty period.

I know cos I've been there and done that - It's simply not worth fiddling about recharging a battery and always wondering when it might let you down next.

Also changing the battery to a different make/capacity may require a little vcds recoding...

Yep the cold weathers really affected it now. Going to get it booked in at VW. Can't believe they were cheaper than halfords. Thanks for the help  :happy2:

Yep had them this morning when the car tried to use all it's power to start. After starting on it's own the clock reset itself, the steering light came to yellow and the ESP light came on. Drove off and in 5 seconds they went out. Didn't help my street was completely iced lol.

If any of you have Costco membership, get your battery from there.

I'm in the trade and noone I know could beat their price on a Bosch S5 - £57.50 inc VAT.  What's even better is that you get a lifetime warranty with it as a member...sweet!

Nice one TomB! My battery has started to develop some worrying symptoms over the past couple of weeks, looks like I'll be heading down to Costco at the weekend, £57.50 is a bargain!

But VW charge that for their battery, depends who you want to go with. Is the Bosch battery better?

One member on here was quoted well over £100 for a genuine battery, even TPS quoted me £74+VAT and I'm in the trade club.

Bosch and Varta are the main suppliers of batteries, the rest are made in China.  I only buy Bosch or Varta.

No worries!  :happy2:

That price has probably gone up, I did buy it in December when VAT was 15% so be prepared to pay around £60

Bit of a thread revival here! Tom can you tell me if the battery you bought at Costco for that price, was the Bosch Silver  S5 008?
I can get one from Halfords reduced from £119.99 to £76.75 with the trade card, but that Costco price is unbelievable!!
Just for info TPS wanted £81.88 + VAT for a genuine one, retail was £100 + VAT!!

Just a quick FYI...

I put off changing the battery until today as my old Varta battery hung on in there for quite a while but finally gave up last week, it'll no longer hold charge for longer than 48 hours so it had to go. Popped down to Costco and that Bosch S5 battery is now £59.99 +VAT (£70.48 in total) which is quite a big difference.

Still cheap though and I can't really complain with their no quibble warranty and the fact that they disposed of my old battery for me.

Take the battery to the scrappy its worth between £5-10 dependant on the price that day, if they say no value in it then they are related to dick turpin
