Title: High mileage GTI 151k a few worries ?
Post by: Talidan on April 22, 2016, 01:25:03 am
Hi, this is my first post on here thinking of buying my mates mk5 gti going to have a test drive next Friday and if i like it give him the moneys!

It's on 151k on a 05 should I be worried at that mileage us it nearly game over I've always owned B series hondas tegs,b18 ek's and eg's and they just do not die and I wouldn't hesitate to buy one on 200k has anyone got a gti on more than 150k

Anyway about the car it has full vw service history only 2owners one of them is my mate he's just done Pre cat delete, Cam follower and a new DV, not a mark on it cars immaculate bodywork wise just wear on drivers bolster that's only thing I can pick at.

Plan would be if I get hold of it new Pcv set up and a backbox delete induction kit then get it over to rtech for a custom stage 1 map

He's asking for £3300 what do you think it's also had Cambelt kit last year not sure if it's had a clutch at some point in its life he's going to look through paperwork.

So opinions please ? And hopefully I'll be sticking around ;)

My GTI is on 157k. Drives brilliantly. As long as you look after them these cars are fine.

You'll be spending a heck of a lot more on the gti where as the ek's etc just need fuel  :signLOL:

Im sure you will enjoy it.

Im of the 'prevention is better than a cure' mindset with my car, especially with the mileage, so tend to replace/upgrade/mod what l can when l can. When it comes to 10 year old cars its better safe than sorry.

Yeah that's exactly like me the cars just had a Cam follower, full timing belt kit new dv and the last 2 vw services come in at just under 2k new calipers all round few other bits, but as soon as a get it if I do I'll be getting the latest revision Pcv set up and a full service and I'll be thinking clutch if it's on a standard clutch even if it's not slipping just for peice of mind

Sounds like he hasn't shirked the bills if he's stumped up for new calipers etc. Why's he selling? That'd be my big question.

You will need to get your hand in your pocket over the next year, but possibly no more so than a 100k car.

Just don't get stung.

I paid 3050 for mine sitting on 180k and pulls fine with no problems

It was the previous owner that owned it for 8 years that had all the work done and then my mates had Cambelt done and new dv etc,  my mates just bored of it he wants a van for work, I'll be checking it out a lot more carefully than I normally would too, between 2008-2012 it covered 101k miles I recon it might of been Fyling up and down motorways but who knows really haha

Mines on 175k and tight as a drum - buy on condition not mileage
As long as its been maintained correctly I cant see why they cant exceed 200k without issue

mines on 123k almost and pulls like its done half (its also for sale in the for sale section -  a shameful bump i know  :P)

as long as its been looked after you will be fine!

If it's been well looked aftered then go for it as the price seems fair.

It's had a new dv 4k ago but I'll double check anyway bud like to see things with my own eyes then I know.

Meeting him tomorrow at 4 ish can't wait this week has gone slow ! been driving a 1.4 skoda for the past 3 months after selling the teg so should feel fast compared to a 60bhp skoda, I'll still be saving for an editon 30 still though :)

In that case it's got nothing then we'll I don't think not had a good look at it haha the blue tinted glass is quite nice though belive it came on 05 cars only and no plans as such still saving up ideally i wanted a 3 door dsg edition 30 will just be minor cosmetic things and a stage 1 rtech map it's got a pre cat delete will probably need a clutch at some point think it's still on standard clutch

Bad news drove 100 miles it was boosting fine engine nice and quiet and pulled up my road and stop engine low oil pressure warning and It only does it if you take it over 2k I have realised so I don't really want to drive it.

Oil pressure switch?

I'm inclined to think it may be the oil pick up pipe help needed asap  :(

Red low oil pressure light means turn it off and don't you start it again until the oil pan is removed and you've cleaned or someone cleans out the oil pick up pipe strainer or puff goes the engine  :slap: didn't you test drive it properly or do you think you've been stiffed with a dud car by your pal?. :surprised:

Right update got my dad to come pick it up on his recovery truck this morning and took it down to his garage, as suspected oil pickup clogged up with sh*te and lots of sh*te in bottom of the sump, so after a good half a hour cleaning both they came up like new also fresh oil and filters and now it's running really smooth sounds much better on idle and most important I have done a hard 60 miles and no oil pressure warning so happy
