Title: Top End Rattle
Post by: neilneddy on May 04, 2016, 07:47:50 pm
Hi All

I am after some help, I was driving home from work today and noticed a rattle that seem to be coming from the top end, very tappety. It is on both idle and moving but is very inconsistent not always there. I have checked the cam follower and all okay. Worried it could be something major. Any help would be appreciated.

So I had a bit of further look into the rattle, checked the cam follower and was in very good condition. I then followed the cam chain tensioner replacement guide to check the state of play inside. Got the cam chain cover off and inspected the camshaft only to find the below.

I am guessing this is not great, but what other potential problems do I need to look for. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Not good, have you got a photo of the end of the HPFP piston

Eg:

Hi v4rley pictures of the HPFP below. Hi doylebros not owned the vehicle long at all, unfortunately no warranty. Not the best start really

Sure you have probably already worked out what's happened. The old cam follower has worn out, resulting in the HPFP piston having direct contact with the cam. So your issues are:

Needs new:
Cam
HPFP

Also as you done know the circumstances of the fauuire their is a good chance the rattle you hear is the old follower floating in the engine.

@doylebros (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6153) is going to be your best resource here...

Thanks for your input v4rley, I am assuming now that previous owners have not checked the follower at any interval other than before it was sold to me. Would autotech internals work for the fuel pump issue rather than new?

Ouch that's really bad and costly too.

Unfortunately it would seem that it has had a new follower shoved in and sold quick.

Are you in a situation to be without the car as driving it isn't a good idea
Repair is going to be costly, its probably going to reach 4 figures.

With regards to internals I would know, I have only gained my knowlage from what I've seen on here over the years. I would imagine a replacement HPFP maybe advised as the piston having direct contact with the cam could have cause stress on the HPFP, that's only a theory though.

New cam shaft is about 300 quid.

Can you DIY?

Hi v4rley fortunately I can keep the car on the drive as using a company vehicle just want to make sure it is right. I will look at coatings for HPFP any advantage in going loba over standard?

Rich83 any idea on best place for camshaft or is it VW direct? My only saving grace is a have a friend who is a hugely experienced mechanic so labour cost would be low, so really just parts.

Thanks to all so far for your assistance.

Well that's fortunate that you can leave it off the road and have a mechanic friend  :notworthy:

Loba would be a good choice if looking to modify to stage 2 just depends on your finances and if you wanted to ensure everying was ok firstly.

Your best place for new parts will be VW or TPS.
