Hi,
round 2 of cooling system overhaul.
I'm pretty sure that the radiator fans are not working. Have tried with aircon and the small one isn't turning. They turn freely by hand. I don't have VCDS to check it but have heard the relay can sometimes go.
Where would I find it to check it? is it one of the three in the engine bay fuse box? or is it somewhere secret?
thanks

Did you find anything more out regarding this? I am on the hunt for the fan control relay. Followed the wiring from the fan connector but it just vanishes into a thousand branches near the battery box
-
Figured out that there are 2 fuses in the engine bay, F38 10a (top left of the engine bay fuse box)
and SA3 50a strip type (on the front of the engine bay fuse box, look at the thick red wires, third one from the left)
these lead to the J293 control module which is in the fan/housing area, where about exactly I haven't located.
J293 -Coolant Fan Control (FC) Control Module
V7 -Radiator Fan
V177 -Coolant Fan 2
I spent hours searching for this info, then next morning fan was working like a charm.
-
Have you tried a direct feed to the fans?.

I think J293 is under the battery tray, bolted to the chassis rail. They're notorious for breaking on MK3 & MK4 platforms cars!
-
Well thanks for the help guys and sorry im hiacking a little Macarthur.
I can only assume my problem is with the J293 module as the fans do work, just not when they should!
Battery tray out tonight it is then!
Thanks again

So ive just nipped the battery and tray out and im still none the wiser as to where this J293 module is?
-
I think J293 is the one mounted on the big fan.
The wires (4) go from battery to module and then 2 wires to the small AC fan

And to confirm that is correct, new fan pack solved all my odd fan running issues.
