Title: Sleeves for Standard Exhaust Tips
Post by: H18Golf on May 27, 2016, 03:53:26 pm
Wondering if anyone can give some advice.

My standard exhaust tips are in decent enough condition but have a bit a rust bubble starting.  From what I have read this is basically the end of keeping the tips looking decent.

Over the past year or so I have read the odd post on people buying anything from Audi sleeves to cheap eBay ones to go over the top of the existing tips and give a newer, better cleaner look.

From memory a lot of these stuck out further than the standard tail pipes.

Has anyone bought any that fit well, look decent and don't stick out further that the existing tips?  Any links would be great.

As always, cheers for the help.   :happy2:

If i'm not mistaken I believe that @Shoduchi (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10590) put some skoda vrs 70mm tips on his car? and it looks the part so perhaps check out his build thread?

Yeah they slide over the standard ones no need for cutting the old ones off. They need a light tap with a mallet.

That's dope man  :signLOL: but look quite small for the valance imho. I may do a chop job and fit bigger ones if available. I've pm Nige @Powervalve Nige (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=331) and see if he replies with some good news.  :jumping:
I would have thought people would be into this kind of thing. bigger tips an all. I won a pair of brand new mk4 R32 ends off ebay 2013 before I even bought the golf but the hobnob didn't honour the winning bid of £40 and I had to get my money back through ebay tow weeks later.

@anonymous

Did you need to fit any screw to the bottom or just tap on with a mallet?  Do they sit pretty much as far out as the standard exhaust tip?

Thanks for the reply.

I've just bought the ebay Bayter sleeves.

Quality is very good but before I mallet them on, do they look strange seeing the old tips inside the new?

Also very interested to know this as I'm thinking of getting these too!

Really interested to know how these look with the old tips inside the sleeves as well.  Also in how exactly people have fitted these (just mallet them on or a fixing screw required).

All you've got to do is use the search button!

They look quite good actually... a bit concerned that you might lose one, if they are only forced on with a mallet. Must go and get the Solvol Autosol out on mine again.....

Much appreciated PND - a search would have been sensible as you say but I'm not always the brightest spark :)

Oh and they are a damned tight fit - 5mm on and you have to drive the rest on with a mallet - no way will they ever fall off a standard GTI tip.

Don't mind  :happy2:

I had a set already off my A4 so put them on until I get an exhaust at a later date. Will not be able to just loose one as they will need a mallet to get back off.

Put mine on tonight,  well pleased they look stock but make the exhaust look beefier.

mine are far past polishing, the tops come out ok but the bottom just has too much delamination/ section loss. I have tried a few times but it is crumbling the tips.

Just ordered the sleeves. Do they ever need polishing?

Put up a photo there!

If you think they're past saving and you're not worried about damage then I recommend getting a drill, throw in a hard wire brush attachment into the chuck and brush the sh*te out of them. Use a chrome/metal polish during the entire process. It will bring them back I almost guarantee it but the rusted bits will come off and it won't look 100%.

You would then need to protect it with something. Possible VHT primer and chrome coat.

If all that fails then you can cover them up like you originally planned.

Think im just going to go down the sleeves route - seeing as they're on their way to me already! I will look into protecting them, although they are stainless steel?

Just got these and in not sure if I'm being stupid and not forcing them on enough but they seem to stick out further and you can see the brackets/clips inside. Can't be right?

Mine are bayer, what are yours? My clips dont stick out like that, I think you've rammed them up. I twisted and pushed them on as far as I could by hand then used a rubber mallet. Perhaps you can bend those pins back and do it again.

Mine stick out by about max 10mm over the standard tips and I think it looks good the way it is

They are not pushed on enough that's why you can see the clips. I used a block of wood and hit that with a hammer to get mine on so not to damage it.
