Title: DAB aerial advice
Post by: An0NyMOUs on May 29, 2016, 06:43:51 pm
Hi all,

I purchased a new head unit that has DAB today, it came with a screen mount aerial but I haven't heard great things about these.

I was wondering if an FM/DAB splitter might work? I don't have a roof aerial, only the one in the back window if this helps.

Open to other suggestions...

I use a screen mount dab aerial. Seems to get most of the major stations and sounds good enough to me. Certainly not crap enough to warrant stripping the car to bits to fit a proper dab aerial on the roof.

I'd be interested to hear other options though.

I'm also interested in this as I have an RCD 510 with this functionality.

Does it provide as a distraction to passengers having the aerial on your front window?

Screen mounted is by far the best option

I don't notice it whilst driving to be honest. I'll take a picture tomorrow so you can see what it looks like.

On my Mk6 I had mine behind the rear view mirror. It was virtually invisible.

I thought top left was the other side

looking at it, it would have been better positioned on the passenger side, but whatever. Like i say, it doesn't distract when driving.

The correct position is passenger side, inbetween the dashboard and headlining (the angle I took the photo makes it look out but its perfect - The distance between the top and bottom of it is the same(I'm such a saddo I measured it!)). I've seen very bad installs of these done by VW dealerships some install them horizontally at the top of the windscreen as well!!! (Followed by the GPS aerial stuck on the dash  !!!)

Here's mine when I fitted the DNX525DAB...

Nice and tidy, correct height, no cable showing, also the earth strip is stuck to the metal under the A Pillar...  :happy2:

No offence but the install in the post above is a right old dogs dinner!  Upside down on the wrong side of the car, installed too far from A Pillar so no earth strip is making contact with metal and showing the cable and also the potential for the windscreen wipers to affect the signal when they wipe across it when on!!!

Lol! That was my dogs dinner of an  install! That's what happens when no instructions are included.

I shall look to rectify when I get a chance.  :rolleye:

I've also put mine on the passenger side, neatest place for it. I don't notice it whilst driving. :driver:
