Title: Top Gear
Post by: MC71 on May 30, 2016, 03:13:48 pm
New Top Gear. Discuss  :popcornsoda:

The basic TG formula that made this show what it was hasn't changed, the features are all a bit samey but it does what it says on the tin.

IMHO Chris Evens was more than up to the task of replacing JC, tough act to follow in the most successful car show on planet Earth but he's a proper petrol head and it showed (although he was far too f*cking shouty) and Matt LeBlanc was a good foil. Need more Sabine too!

 :happy2:

Features were boring and predictable.... CE is a clown trying to be like JC. MLB was a bit annoying.

New TG track is cool though. Liked that bit.

Tbh I didn't think it was too bad. It's never going to be the same as team Clarkson made it so a lot of people will just hate it from scratch.
They can't go changing everything about the show can they.
I just wish they'd go into more detail about there guests cars etc.

It could have been much worse. I think it's got the legs to improve. I couldn't quite adjust to Evans' voice over the Viper feature, and it got a bit 'cars for dummies' when he was talking about downforce.

Matt Le Blanc wasn't too bad. Sabine was ok. All a bit scripted, which it always was with Clarkson etc, but they don't quite make it feel as natural as OG Top Gear.

I agree on the new RX track, it made better telly than the old one. I was watching the WRX on Quest earlier in the day incidentally, and quite enjoyed it. Seems the sport is having a bit of a resurgence, so the track ties in and keeps things current.

Ramsey can drive.

I'll watch it next week.

I miss "capt'n slow", "the hamster" & Clarkson

There is a lot to improve! It's in it's baby's shoes!
Must admit I like a lot the New reasonably priced car and the new track lay-out!
Will follow the new series!

I too thought it was pretty good.
I didnt like Chris Evans trying to be a clarkson-ite. didnt work

i did laugh at some bits. i actually quite liked MLB!
i wish they would allow Chris Harris to do some actual road testing like chris harris on cars.
Title: Re: Top Gear
Post by: MC71 on May 30, 2016, 07:36:36 pm
^^^^ Yeap, Chris Harris needs to do some real road tests, that's why we like him so let him do his thing. Why have a proper automotive journalist and not use him.

Wasn't convinced by the new show "Extra Gear", what's the point? Was just like a mini Top Gear?? Odd. Time will tell.

I read the twitter meltdown before watching it and expected an absolute nightmare but I was pleasantly surprised.

Pros
New reasonably priced car/track
Artistry and cinematography we all accustomed to on
'Joey' got better as the show went on

Cons
Chris Evans constantly shouting in the studio
Blatant scripting but hopefully this will ease as the 'rapport' builds

I am hoping they cut a lot of the pure 'silliness' TG had become all too familiar with and go back to basics. At least then they will not be competing with the 'winning formula' of automotive jackassing which will be 'The Grand Tour'

Id love to see them having a proper go at Motorsports and attempting records ect combined with some reviews as I fear if they continue trying to goof around people will lose interest fast.

Not as bad as I was expecting, as mentioned I hated CE literally doing an impression of JC throughout and the constant shouting.

I really like Sabine and she needs to be in it more not just a cameo along with Chris Harris doing the proper road tests as he's fantastic, proper driver and a great journalist.

MLB is good but I feel like he should be the cameo not the co-host and Chris Harris should take his place.

Feels like the ingredients are there for somethjg half decent but needs some tweaking. I will never LIKE CE but I will probably learn to tolerate him if they keep the rest of it fresh. I found myself skipping as the items really seemed to drag quite a lot.

Wasn't as bad as I expected but Chris Evans shouting really annoyed me.  :fighting:

Well, just watched it back on BBC iPlayer and it's about as average as I was expecting to be honest.

I honestly couldn't stand CE throughout the entirety of the episode, constant shouting was unbelievably annoying.

I did however find Matt LeBlanc quite funny and he could work well on the show.

More Sabine needed please <3

So is Harris going to be on the main show at all or just the 'Extra Gear' thing?

He seemed very good with a few Tiff things with 'Mr Needles' on 5th Gear the last couple of years. And obviously he''s no dummy in You Tube car world.

I just finished watching TG on the iplayer...I didn't like CE...too much shouting etc etc...matt was ok but I think his acting is a bit too stiff..Again not enough of Sabine..
If I was the bbc,I would replace CE but still use matt & Sabine

I thought the show was a safe attempt at a first episode. It'll get better as the co-stars gel more.

Granted there should have been more Sabine and the RX track was great.

I honestly thought it was terrible. They are almost wooden lol, zero chemistry and the parts in the studio are borring . They should of gone In a different direction imo as the success of the Clarkson, Hammond and May show was down to their personalities.

Think it's got better and better since the first rubbish show. Wish people would move on from them 3 muppets they had there time but in the end it was just utter boring predictable crap.

I thought the first 2 episodes were awful, but episode 3 was very good!

There was less Chris Evans, more Sabine and Harris, good guests, great cars, and Ken Block + LeBlanc was the icing on the cake!

This might work.

Basically, the less screen time Chris Evans gets, the better it gets!

Does he realise he has a mic?

I hadn't noticed the shouting until social media pointed it out. It doesn't bother me.

I like the new show, im sure ill like Jeremy clarksons show as well.

At the end of the day - its a car show. Same reason I like wheeler dealers

I find it strange when it was announced TFI Friday was coming back for a few more shows everyone was happy about it but now he's got the Top Gear gig no one likes him.

He's always been a bit shouty but if you're a car fan you should be able to get over it easily enough.

I have watched all 4 episodes so far. The first 2 were OK but the 3rd and 4th have been very good  :congrats:

Chris Harris has been the star of the series in my opinion.

My friends brother works at Audi and was lucky enough to get to bring home an RS3 on Sun night so we took it for a spin, lovely sounds and good power but didn't seem to feel all that quick. I only watched the Top Gear yesterday but wasn't too surprised by the fun o meter results he had.

Matt Le Blanc just seems bored, Chris Evans seems uncomfortable, Rory at least really wants to be doing the job but just doesn't deliver for me (Though this is probably an unfair comparison to the previous presenters) the Jag to the Motorshow was a good piece with interesting history I thought. Sabine has been missing in the most part but I find her quite charismatic, she should be kept on the track though

Post by: Scottymon on July 01, 2016, 12:53:25 pm
I agree Chris Harris works really well on TG.  The others are OK, but Chris Evans seems out of place and his reviews kind of forced.
It can't be easy though, and I'm sure the show will develop over time.
Title: Re: Top Gear
Post by: garrardrj on July 01, 2016, 01:13:45 pm
They needed a "Face" to front the programme, imho Evans was the wrong one. The others on the show are ok , how to get rid of him though ? Give it to Chris Harris as he develops ? That would be my choice. That said the new show has improved since the first one.
Title: Re: Top Gear
Post by: dan930 on July 01, 2016, 02:10:17 pm
The show is getting better but maybe we are used to clarkson & co
Saw in the papers suggesting jenson button might take over from CE!!!
Does he have the time as his commited to F1?
Title: Re: Top Gear
Post by: Shoduchi on July 01, 2016, 06:41:47 pm
I agree with most that have said that the show has been improving with time. Chris Evans was so shouty in the 1st episode! Damn! How can a man be that shouty!!?? Well, I think he's been trying to lower a bit his tone of voice...

Matt Le Blanc has been a good surprise. I wasn't expecting much from him but he's doing the job better than most of the others. I also like most of what Rory Reid has done so far. Sabine should be kept on the track, not presenter material... Eddie Jordan I suppose has been doing what he was paid to do. Be that weird character.

Just love every review done by Chris Harris! He's the real star of the show.

If you guys haven't seen them already, check out the gymkhana series of vids by Ken Block, on YouTube.

I'm just hoping the BBC has the balls to take TV time away from Chris Evans in favour of Le Blanc and the others which are taking a shine to the camera like Chris Harris. Sabine is a good driver and to have as part of features, but she's no presenter!

Off topic but you seem to be able to post hutchy?

You can't PM until your post count is a bit higher

Chris H and Rory have been the reason I've kept watching it, their reviews are always good. Matt has his moments but there's just no chemistry between him and Evans. Chris Evans style just doesn't fit IMO unlike Chris H and Rory. Sabine should just be there thrashing a car round a track to within an inch of its life as that's what she does best.

Not sure where I stand with star in a car as it seemed good at the start but the wet laps last week seemed pointless. And I hate the stars reading what each other do off the autocue, would be better getting 2 stars who are promoting/working together on the same project rather than 2 randoms.

Haha. Very true... the whole idea I guess is to build it up with some conversation first then blast it round the track... somewhat diluted with two peeps.

I know there would be horrendous Insurance problems, but I'd love to see celebs use a half decent motor; they are always strapped in with proper seats / helmet / harness etc.... give them some HP... something that is LOUD so we can hear when they are being pansies and lifting off, and something that will scare the pants off them... nothing too mental, perhaps a Polo WRC motor.... .... ...

I'd like to see that. Or maybe stick with the Mini, then get the top 3 on the leaderboard at the end of each series to come back and set a lap in something 300bhp+, at Silverstone...

If there is to be another series.

Yeah, I thought that yesterday's was the best of the current series. Might just be that the cars they reviewed were my cuppa tea, but I found it very entertaining. Matt le B has turned out to be very good. Chris E has faded into the background, which is a shame as he is such a petrol head. Still, not like he needs the money, is it........

Nor did Jeremy Clarkson .
The stars and the mini driving dragged on on the last episode , so as i hate that part the 14.5 minutes of the programme was fast forwarded , that is a quarter of the programme ! I think that part needs to go too tbh.

^^^ This

The old Top Gear bored me to tears near the end. This started badly but have enjoyed the last 4. Despite my earlier reservations, Matt Le Blanc has turned out rather good and I think he will blossom if he continues.
They've gone back to the cars rather than the crappy same old challenges and I think that's what will serve them well for the future.

Well not better. It gets more like the original top gear which is more about arguments with Jeremy and minimal info on cars.

Both shows have good and bad points, a few cringe worthy moments in the new GT show but also some laugh out loud moments.
