Title: Getting stuck in gear and not going in
Post by: Scoobykiller on June 04, 2016, 07:24:03 pm
Basically sometimes my gti gets stuck in gear and its very hard to take it out.
Sometimes it wont go in unless i turn car on/off or pump?
And sometimes bite changes like the car trys running away from me
Abd most of the time its perfect?
Is it just a matter of bleeding the clutch?

Input shaft end bearing spinning in the case, causes end float int he shaft. tell tail signs the clutch pedal move on its own when your foot is slightly resting on it when feathering  the throttle slightly.

Presuming its a early gti 6 speed? the later boxes they modified the bearing to have a flat so it cant physically spin any more.

Yes its a 54 model
I been told its pressure plate?
Thing is all these symptoms only happen sometimes not all time not all the way through a drive
What you reckon best thing to do is
I dont understand what you mean about pedal moving on its own?

I'd start with the cheapest options first:

Clean/lubricate gear linkage/cables
Reset your gear cables - there's a guide somewhere on how to do this (very easy)
Bleed the clutch and make sure you get all the old fluid out
Change gearbox oil - use genuine vw oil only

No point in pulling the box off and replacing it and or changing the clutch before trying the cheaper and easier options first.

Obviously try the above first, you don't have to remove the box to do a temp repair if the input shaft is moving. you can pop the black cap off which reveals the bearing and circlip which you can shim to take the play.

And if that is the problem whats the permanant fix

I been told by many its the clutch :slap:

I been reading up on this and you are correct but this is for 02m boxes not 02q boxes so the shim wont work heres the part numbers
WHT-001-976
02M-301-211-B

Early 02Q gearboxes suffer with this as i done it to my own 05 gti last month and numerous early 3c Passats, usually you can get away with a shim

Hi @vag (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=15706), I have a 05 GTI and I'm wondering if mine might be affected too. When you added the shim was there already a shim in place or like the 02M boxes was it just a snap ring?

No shim just a snap ring, 1 shim is usually enough. My one was so bad i managed to put 2 shims!
