Title: Removing the battery whilst away on holidays
Post by: fab5freddy on June 06, 2016, 01:35:15 pm
Going away on Thursday for 10 days, i have to leave the car on the driveway, so been thinking would it be worth taking the battery out as an extra measure to help prevent theft?

Anyone done this before? Any obvious problems i might cause by doing this?

Opinions please  :happy2:

AFAIK none. You'll just have to program the comfort feature of the window switches when you reconnect the battery and readjust the clock.

Just remember to check that your manual key operated drivers door lock works, as you'll need it when you get back of holiday!

Not worth the effort. If they can bypass the immobiliser then a battery is the least of their worries considering they would have up to a whole ten days to come back and 'finish the job'

There are better/ more subtle ways of imoblising a car that I would rather not post about on an open forum ......scallies are always trawling

Get a suitable visible deterrent.

If you hide the keys and have the doors deadlocked then they can only take it away on a flat bed...

Not true, 5 minutes with a laptop and they could drive it away

Disabling the engine itself is the best bet. Rich's idea is the best so far

Not sure about that on a non kessy car but IMO the easiest option would then be to pull the 20A ignition coil fuse in the engine compartment.

I just put mine in "KILL" mode with my GIAC loader and take the loader with while away. Don't know if it can be bypassed...but I feel like I will find my GTI still parked when I return. Also, it sits inside the garage.  :happy2:

Remove the plugs and put coil packs back in, no chance of it starting... loosen all the wheel bolts and leave the keys in it....

Thanks all for the comments and suggestions.

Of course if someone really wants it probably not much to stop them, but every little helps, i seen those videos of the M1 being nicked from right outside the front door via laptop  :scared:

@rich83 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=709) couple of coils will be popped out also  :happy2:

@r5gtt (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11199) it is just a golf mate, but it's my golf

A professional thief with the correct tools can program in a new key in a matter of minutes. With the right tools it really is that easy.

If the GIAC device works In the same way as the REVO SPS, and has 'switchable maps' in the same was as Revo, APR etc etc. then I'm pretty sure a simple battery disconnect would reset it to the normal/default program.

I know sorry @fab5freddy (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=3064) but don't loosen the wheel nuts as you may forget and drive off when you get back.  :surprised:

Is this a Golf we're talking about, or a Lambo / Fezza / Aston????  FFS, lock it up in the garage and go enjoy your holiday. U probably spent a quarter / half of the value of your car on your holiday, and the car is insured.....

You not got a neighbour who can keep an eye on it for you?

City center bud, very good neighbors thankfully, but the guy next door had his motorbike nicked from right outside his front door just a couple of weeks ago  :sad1:

Can't stand the thought of the thieving sh*t heads helping themselves to what ever they want
