horrible rattle from the chain area of the engine but I only get it when the cars up to temperature not from cold ive ordered the bits to replace the chain but one of my mates who's an audi master tech is saying I may have an oil pump problem whats peoples opinions on this
-
Its not uncommon for people to get a rattle from the cam chain area, due to the chain or chain tensioner wearing . Does it sound like a diesel (usual sympton)? Saying that if the head were starved of oil then I guess the chain would be a lot noiser, but not sure it would still run happily with that little oil - can your mate plumb in a pressure gauge to confirm oil pressure?
-
Yes it definitely sounds like a diesel :sad1:and I can probably put in a gauge if I
want because I'm a mechanic for a living but I just wondered if other people had the same problem
-
To be honest it could be either.
Check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge to rule out oil pump, pickup or any other oil pressure related issues. The warning light is only triggered by stupidly low oil pressure (less than 1 bar) so it is definitely worth ruling out
-
more problems today :sad1: got the chain cover off to find the variable valve timing part that is in the cover had a shattered ring

rang tps and they want £360 for a new cover and say the part cant be bought separate :stupid: after some internet research I found a vw part number 06f-198-107-a which I will be getting tomorrow hopefully these will fit, can anyone shed any light on this mine has the metal rings already not the plastic
-
:scared: no way I have a mate who's had the exact same issue discovered today

I'm hoping not to have to have a casing and just be able to replace the rings ive got some coming tomorrow that I'm hoping will fit from tps, will let you no as soon as I no, I'm guessing that casing isn't off a colf it looks different
-
It's from a golf, same as yours the cam follower is in the bottom of the casing which might be distracting you.
Interested to see how you get on. With regards to the new cover, vw do sell it separate but is only about £50 cheaper, but still included the n205 but not the cam adjuster which is worth a lot more than the £50 they knock off :fighting:
-
That will be what that extra bit I can see is  yeah I was looking at buying it separate didn't no they done a kit and at 360+vat just for the end casing I'm not keen hence I'm trying just these new rings and hoping for the best as the cam adjuster doesn't have any ridges or anything so fingers crossed
-
Got then new rings today all the same apart from the ones on the car were metal and the new ones are plastic, I've fitted them and they all fitted fine so will get the rest of the car together tonight and fingers crossed it will be fine
-
Yes just read on fb group about the rings apparently better as easier to install and don't scratch the adjuster. Hope all goes well :happy2:
-
Yeah they went on really easy as they open up a lot easier fingers crossed now it runs okay with them
-
was this shattered ring the cause of the rattle ? or was it the chain then ?
-
I would still say the chain was the rattle the rings are to small to even here I would suspect

Hiw bad was your chain , mine is similar noise when warm
-
The chain itself doesn't seem that bad but I've been told it's usually the tensioner more at fault
-
:happy2: cheers for the info pal
