Title: I Need Help! Buying an ED30 Import
Post by: TheBALDpuma on July 15, 2016, 03:54:00 pm
Hello again, my second topic since I joined an I'm all take take take, so sorry about that!

I'm looking at an ED30 that really is in lovely conditioning, albeit with a few scuffs and kurbed alloys that the dealer is going to sort or me.  I went back to go through the paperwork today and a few things popped up...

It had a DSG service at 31,000 miles (now at 57,000), 4 years ago.  Does this need to be done imminently? And how much would it likely cost me, if the dealer doesn't want to do it himself?

It's an Import.  Date of first registration, and date of first registration in the UK are the same - it has one original stamp from a german dealer when it left the factory/dealer and was taken straight to the UK. No build number in the car, no spare tyre standard import stuff I believe.  Just a couple of things...

I read somewhere all imports are black?  This one is red?

When you do a car check on it, it comes up as being a "Golf GTI (200)", and does so when geting an insurance quote too.  Is this an error?  The v5 says 230Kw.  The insurance is cheaper than a quote on a UK ED30.

Are imports worth the same as a UK car?  This one is up for top dollar, at £11k and I'm a little bit uneasy paying top dollar for an import.

Your advice is greatly appreciated.

DSG service should be done every 40000 miles according to VW. Should be £179 I think but does vary depending on special offers. Log book should show Golf GTI Edition 30 230 SA for semi automatic. V5 should show 169 KW.

Thanks.  Not the end of the world if he doesn't do it then.

Any thoughts on the price?  Are imported ED30s generally cheaper? I can't find any info.

Compare the spec to a UK car. IIRC some imported cars didnt have alarms or immobilisers, the was other differences as well but I can't remember them

There are plenty for under 11k so I wouldn't bother with the hassle with that one.

£11k is at the top of what these are selling for, but this is the cleanest, lowest mileage one I've seen and I specifically want a red 5dr DSG that hasn't been modded - there aren't THAT many of those, and as far as I'm concerned this one isn't really any extra hassle, I just don't want to pay over the odds and lose out when I come to re sell it if imports generally sell for a % less.

Compared to a UK car in the same condition/spec/mileage I'd say it's priced about right, maybe £500 high.

I would say imports are always worth less, personally I wouldn't bother with it. Odd it comes up as a normal Gti. I'd be checking it isn't a standard one which has been made to look like an ED30.

Like someone else said there are loads about in fact a few nice red dsg ones on this forum which have a few small mods which in my opinion make the car better.
You can take a remap off if you really want to.
You have no way of telling if the one you are looking at has been modded in the past.

Price wise I think it's massively overpriced. Most are actually. I'm currently in the market for one and simply not giving in to these crazy asking prices.

For reference I bought mine 5 years ago on its 3rd birthday and 33k miles fully loaded (manual) for £12,000!
So how can a 9 year old one with significantly more miles be even close to that. It's madness. I've almost given up and started to look at golf r's. Much better value in my opinion now.

Don't buy that one.  There are plenty about and less money. The import issue and what you have found so far will hinder you when it comes to sell and may cause issues if an Insurance claim is made due to it being shown as a standard Gti .
People who want ED30's get a bit impatient as there are limited numbers . Also buying one off here nearly guarantees and enthusiast has owned it which is important for a 8/9 year old car.
Also prices are high and that will continue , they have stayed the same for 2 years plus. I sold mine in April 2014 . They WILL be a future classic and well worth keeping long term , my one has been put offroad soon after i sold it.

Don't forget to also keep an eye out for a Pirelli, lot less of them about (just 222 imported into UK), basically the same car, but bespoke interior and in my opinion nicer wheels :happy2:
Should hold money just as well as ED30 if not better due to numbers.

Good luck with the hunt, don't rush to get one, plenty of ED30's out there to chose from.
I agree that you will never know if it has been modded, this is probably more likely on an ED30/Pirelli than a standard GTi, as the power gains are massive from a simple ECU remap, so why wouldn't you do it?! Completely safe to do a Stg 1 without any damage to car, after all, it is a de-tuned S3 engine  :happy2:

Mine is a Dubai import and I've had no issues with it and it came better spec'd than standard GTIs you get here. Came with a alarm and immobiliser fitted. But I don't plan on selling it now and will keep it for a while yet.

Isn't the one above the one that Volkswizard bought as a Jersey car and the DVLA have messed up the UK registration so it has been removed from their site until it is sorted? Do like the look of a red door though.

This one is a good spec and miles - just the lack of 2013 & 2015 services that I would want to investigate a bit;

I would buy that if it had had the services that are missing and the dodgy paint sorted. Pity

How about this rather nice looking Pirelli instead? low mileage and a good price if everything else stacks up? :happy2:

That does look good for the price! All original and looks well cared for. No options other than the armrest that I can see. I've only ever seen a few Pirelli's with a lot of options fitted. I guess this one could have cruise, highline, and RNS510 added quite easily. As said, these could hold their value better in the long term as they will appeal to the true enthusiasts.
I looked at one before my ED30 - the dealers I bought mine from had no idea what one was, even though their other Cardiff branch was selling one at the time...!

To the OP - good luck with the search!

So... Deposit down on that Pirelli!  It was in lovely condition, and really really looked after by the gentleman that owned it.  Your right no options, but I'm not fussed really, although I would have liked cruise but I understand it isn't difficult or expensive to have it retro fitted?  I was originally after DSG, but having driven both now I think I'm better off in a manual. I'm going to feel bad putting mileage on this one, and letting the dog get in it as it's in such nice condition inside!

Excellent!!, welcome to the select Pirelli Club  :happy2: I am sure that you will be delighted with it, nice to have a car that is rare, desirable and will hold its money   :jumpmove:

Doesn't look like it needs much doing? Only had mine for a few months,  but already replaced the Cam follower, Installed a Bluefin re-map (what a difference!!!!) plus K&N, replaced the DV with the GFB DV+ and had the wheels refurbished (they got it wrong the first time, but re-painted them a second time and they look extremely close to original , very pleased)

If you decide to go the OEM look on the wheels, I can give you the details of the colour/re-furb guys?
Add your name to the Pirelli Register  :happy2:

PS Think you had the car for a good price. Mine has 54K miles, advertised at 10.5K and I got it for £9,750, I was happy with that; did you manage to get some movement on the price?

I got it for £8750 :)  based on one tiny ding on the front left wing (looks like a car door opened into it) and a 2cm light kurb scuff on an alloy, otherwise not a mark on it.  Silver is good for hiding stone chips etc isn't it.  Are all the pirellis silver?

I'll be keeping it standard I expect - as for the wheels I quite like the slightly darker look, and they're in near perfect condition so I won't be changing them right away, but if I do I expect I would take it back to OEM.

Need to go to the bank today and ask them for some money!

I'm going to try and not put mega miles on it, but I generally do about 15k a year, and carry a lot of stuff in the boot with work so I'm going to have to be really careful, and buy myself a good quality boot protector!  I was factoring in getting the car detailed but I'm not sure this one will need it!

That is a good price, it was pretty good before the negotiating, that's why I posted the link, well done, a grand cheaper than mine and slightly less mileage.....result.
Dent master may be able to get the dent out for around £25? wheels sound clean too, mine were corroded so I couldn't live with that!

They came in Reflex Silver, Pearl Black and Yellow, I must say that having already had a Pearl Black one, they show the dirt and scratches far too easily, yellow is too bright and the Reflex Silver is IMO the best  :happy2:

I love Silver on a Mk5  :happy2:, my previous ones were Black and Grey, but silver is so forgiving as you say, hides the dirt and small scratches well  :happy2:

I have one of these VW mats in the back, kept it from my first almost new Gti 9 years ago, is light weight foam type material and apart from a small mouse hole (stored in garage for years!), works great.

Got these genuine rubber mats in the footwells, and have the originals stored safe, saves the carpet and easily washed

You need to get one of these too, far superior and look much more modern. You may have to change your canbus thou, but I am no expert on that, only ever changed one and it was a pig to do!!

The wheels do look great! Yeah that media system does look better, any idea on cost for an install?  And any idea on cost for getting cruise fitted?

Very pleased with wheels, and a good match to the original colour, but it was a stressful 2 weeks waiting for them to get them done a second time. I tried everywhere to try to get a paint code, but it doesn't exist!! even phoned wheel manufacturer Ronal in Germany, when I finally got to speak to someone in English on my third attempt, they said they didn't have a code!

Mine was already fitted with the RNS510 (with SatNav), but I fitted the RCD510 to my last Gti myself and then had a battery drain problem!
So I had to get a new canbus that had been programmed for the alterations and fit it. It was located right up behind the pedals and was a real b*tch to change, but once done all okay.

There are plenty of units for sale here and on the bay (best unit is the RNS510 with DAB), but you will probably have to get the canbus coded or upgraded and then coded.
Someone on here is offering a service to do this, together with the cruise update (this also needs to be coded!)

I really fancy the reversing camera in the boot handle, but this will mean re-coding etc! it is a pain!!

I would hang on for a good GB numbered ED 30. I have only had mine about a month and only looked the at 2 before I bought my favourite car ever #1000. The first one I went to see was in excellent condition but as I looked through the docs I found it was possibly a German import. I did a VIN check and rang VW to confirm. That put me off as it didn't have any of the EU to UK transfer stuff and I wouldn't get a badge  :scared:. Having that number adds 20 mph to anyone's car.

Other reasons would be resale, insurance and spec. I eventually found one with the must haves of Xenons and lots of other goodies already fitted at a price I felt I could afford. Still not the cheapest but it was from a garage, came with a short warranty and it felt right.

Just keep looking as they seem to come along like buses, none for weeks then a rash of them. Good luck hunting mate but keep it British.

Addendum: Silly me missed the later purchase post. Nice you found something... good price too as thats what I paid for my Uk Eddy.

Assuming this would work...?

Looks really nice and it is the latest LED model with DAB and 7 digit post codes. Apparently the later reg cars can take them without battery drain probs?
