Title: remote central locking

My 05 plate has sometimes not locked when the remote central locking button has been pressed.  The red LED in the key lights for a short period of time but the car doesn't lock.  Could this be the battery running low??  It doesn't do this all the time but has just started recently. 

Any help would be greatly received.

Yes it doesn't seem to matter.  I believe the sensor is on the drivers side of the front windscreen and I tried right next to there and it's the same.  It's very intermittent and has only started when the weather got really cold
