Title: Show me your boost gauges!
Post by: lukemk5gti on July 20, 2016, 03:38:28 pm
Anybody out there able to recommend a boost gauge they've fitted to their GTI?

Newsouth indigo. Had mine for years and was great (had mine in vent pod). Lights up OEM in colour at nighttime plus helps to see if there are any boost related problems at a glance.

Defi Boost gauge if you want to spend more and P3 if your after a digital one.

Awesome GTI sell Newsouth.

Is the boost readout on Polar FIS adequate for keeping an eye on things?

Or would a proper needle be better?

Have the new south indigo for boost and polar FIS for temps etc.

Nice. Can't deny a proper boost gauge is a cool thing anyway :)

From what I've hear the boost on Polar is requested and not actual as there's no factory sensor but I could be talking sh*t.

That'd make sense, as normal gauges use a boost tap rather than an existing sensor. Although you can log requested against actual in VCDS can't you... so I'm not sure? I may also be talking dogsheet :)

check out PSI tuning website they have several OEM looking options available.

Wouldn't the ECU work out boost pressure using the manifold air pressure (MAP) sensor? That would be a way of the PolarFIS being able to display both requested and "actual" (as a calculation of ambient air pressure taken from MAP reading). Just a guess though...

Polar fis apparently displays both "actual" and "requested" parameters. I've no idea how it's accomplished. Seems to peak at around 11 on my stock k03 which is about right iirc.

The readout isn't very smooth, a dedicated gauge would be nicer for sure. I like dubvrs' setup.

Not sure on the petrol ECU's but there is one limitation with Polar FIS, well it actually lies within the ECU when it comes to boost. It does with the Siemens ECU anyway. It is able to read figures higher than 1.6 Bar but cannot display them. If you log boost in VCDS, it will go off the chart at 2.6 bar (1 Bar atmosphere + 1.6 Bar boost). This also happens on the Polar. Mine maxes out at 1.66 Bar. My map is set to peak at 1.75 which I cannot see without a mechanical gauge.

Here is my gauge. Also Newsouth Indigo.

Iv got a p3cars in my car but for some reason it slowly drains my battery, probably doesn't help I only use the car once a week
It is a great bit of kit tho im assuming that because my car is an 05 has something to do with the drain

I noticed this in a Scirocco at the dealers a few months ago.

I'm guessing if it was an easy retrofit to the mk5 I'd have seen it by now. The big vent thing on the top of a mk5 dash though... is it of any real use? And could it be swapped for the Scirocco pod?

I thought this too when I saw the Scirocco interior, wonder if anyone has done it. Can imagine the gauges from VW won't be cheap though !, does look very nice. Really not a fan of pods in air vents or stuck on the top of the steering wheel cowl. Always look really added on. Very happy with my Polar FIS. Great bit of kit, good value too compared to the gauge +pod system too.  :happy2:

Wouldn't the ECU work out boost pressure using the manifold air pressure (MAP) sensor? That would be a way of the PolarFIS being able to display both requested and "actual" (as a calculation of ambient air pressure taken from MAP reading). Just a guess though...

I may be wrong but as far as I can work out, the Polar FIS is connected to the Diags CAN bus but using the cable as it exits the Gateway in the same way the VCDS lead would, it will send continuous requests to the ECUs for the required data (in the same way VCDS does). In theory, you should be able to see all the data you can with VCDS if the FIS were programmed to, just by sending the right command.

I doubt they would plug directly into the powertrain CAN bus from a safety point of veiw (you dont want to screw up your bus ;) ), but I purely base that on the fact that I've seen people say their FIS box has problems due to the connector wires breaking and also that the Vector CAN bus equipment I have says it cannot be used in the USA as they dont like direct CAN bus connections.

I'm guessing the vent mounted gauges are the same.

Anything is possible if you really want it...... To get this working you'd need to convert from CECM to BCM which is a ball ache to say the least. Custom mounting needed as the centre vent on our cars is a different shape. Then the absolute kicker is that the boost gauge from VW measures atmposhferic and not actual so the gauge isn't really any use. It looks good for people to show passengers but if you want it to keep an eye on things you'd always be 1.2 bar over reading. I still want it cause I'm a tart   :innocent: To be fair the BCM also opens up loads more interesting technology to retro fit. Definitely over my skill level but the BCM conversation has been done

Interesting info. I agree, it does look pretty cool.

If this would be a bit too much of a job to be worthwhile, what about a custom built pod that resembles the Scirocco's, using the mk5 top vent (or the void left when you remove it) as a template?

That'd be a nice little project. You'd have the freedom of design, the choice of dials and gauges, and it shouldn't be too complex to rig up.

The Newsouth dash pod in that link looks a bit obviously 'stuck on' to me.

Thinking laterally... what about a display of the Polar values, but on say an RNS510 or something. You could have 'virtual' needle gauges, certainly for boost, which would make it easier to see psi values at a glance. In theory. And it'd also have that cool factor. Is that possible?

I'm sure plenty of cars come with that, R35 GTR springs to mind.

@AJP (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11926) that dash pod does look stuck on and not my taste but could be used as a base to attach the top of the VW part on. Everything else is already done so easier to do.
The easiest way to have a display as you suggest is to bin the RNS (I don't think that can be made to display anything other than it already does) and install an iPad. These guys - https://instagram.com/p/BGP9O__lcYT/ do excellent work and have done many installs with iPads. Get a blue tooth OBD2 scanner and a suitable app then have all the info displayed on the screen as well as nav, iTunes, angry birds etc. I think the app a lot of people use is called torque pro but not 100%. Info won't go through the MFD though to my knowledge

You've got my brain ticking away with that idea. Certainly an alternative to Polar FIS if there's an app that displays the same data as accurately. And moreso for me, I'm looking to upgrade the headunit at some point. Two birds one stone. I'd guess that for someone who already has an RNS510 or decent HU the better option is Polar, and a traditional boost gauge if needed. But for me... I really like the idea.

Regarding Polar, I do have Highline, but no multifunction wheel, so if I was to go for Polar FIS instead for whatever reason would I still have full access to its functions? Either way, the option you suggested with the ipad sounds better - for my needs at least. I actually saw a few screenshots of the Torque Pro display when I was googling things earlier. Looks decent.

If an ipad also functions well with a decent speaker/amp/sub setup it could be a winner. As much as I like the idea of gauges on the screen, I still like my tunes, and sound quality. Maybe if the ipad outputs to a processor before the amp that could work.

Hmmmm. Lots of research ensues. Need to sort out some greasy nuts and bolts before I get that far though. I've no choice but to make this a long term project!

@AJP (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11926) from what I understand the iPad sits in front and is connected to a processor that goes into the amp(s) the iPad can output digital signal so sound quality is way better than OEM. This, of course, will depend on the rest of the hardware you use in your install  :happy2:

@AJP (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11926) from what I understand the iPad sits in front and is connected to a processor that goes into the amp(s) the iPad can output digital signal so sound quality is way better than OEM. This, of course, will depend on the rest of the hardware you use in your install  :happy2:
You're helping me spend money I don't have yet
I'm very good at doing that to myself  What I want to do to my car V what it'll cost is plain stupid!!
Exactly mate! But I suppose that's where the fun is, at least going some way towards upgrading things in the direction you like, and learning loads in the process.

I actually think doing things on a real world budget and timescale makes a project miles more rewarding. You see these 'chequebook cars' that have 20k spent on them within a month of them leaving the factory, no doubt getting all the cred at shows etc, but I'd bet a good proportion of those are owned by people who don't really know exactly how/what/why their car has been modified in the way it has. Like the Plush Automotive cars. Don't get me wrong, Luke himself is incredibly skilled and his work is amazing, but I just get the feeling a few of his customers roll up with the latest VAG and a big credit card and ask for "slammed and ice" and they drive around feeling cool as.

I used to drive around to alloy fabricators getting spacers milled by 2mm and spring shims made up so I could get my old mk4 up in the air and get the stance millimetre-perfect, by myself. That's what it's all about for me!

Anyway, I'm rambling. I'll have a good read up on the ipad thing. Cheers again for the info mate

You can buy a android based head unit and use a Bluetooth obd2 dongle, then install one of the android obd reader apps that display boost etc. Plenty of options available. Someone on here has that working. Any android head unit will work.
