..........if it's on the AXX engine code get them to have a look at the small cam chain on the right hand side of the engine (as you look in the engine bay).Mine was doing this & a few others have had the same.Had this chain/tensioner replaced & sounds like a petrol GTI should now.  :happy2:

thanks-the guy is looking at it-he is cambelt specialist and a nice guy so he gonna take a look and tell me without any agg what/if i need but ill print this off and ask him!
i thought i might as well get it done anyways as its nearly 5 yrs old.
any other links to this ?
thanks guys
 matsu
EDIT- even if its not the cambelt and its fine  having a 5 yr old car would you all get your belt changes anyways as preventititititititittive or leave till the 60k?
am thinking my modding fund has just taken a potential whack! :sad1:

Any further news?

Ive got and ed30 on an 07. Had it for about 6 months and it does the same thing, on other vw forums people have had to have cambelts and tensioners changed/tightened. Mine is booked in next wednesday at a stealer.....see what happens.

hi mate
he listened intently with stethoscope i kid you not and immedialty said nothing sounded untoward with the engine but cos my car is 5 yrs old and even tho only just done 40k he recommended me to change cambelt due to time and distance not necc wear and tear! and he thinks as the comments about the tensioners in previous cases(on here) he thinks the new bits will take care of the the "noise"
hope thats helps!

Thanks,

I will have to wait and see what happens to mine. Is on an 07 but has done 47k so i suppose it could be the cambelt. It was fully serviced before i bought it from the dealers though so would hope that they would have done it if necessary rather than wait for it to come in under warranty.
The sound it makes at start up is bloody awful. It sounds worse than my old mk4 tdi!!!
The air con is constantly making funny tapping noises in mine too.
Hope yours clears up when its changed.

Matsu,

The noise gone from your car since you had the cambelt done?
Mine is being done at the dealers tomorrow.

James.

Hi mate the noise is still there but less deisel like it's def a noisy tickover tho but it might be me and a placeabo effect but engine feels "tighter" if that makes sense . Not happy I had to. Spend the cash but feel beta about the car and safety of my engine

If the car is out of warranty, how much does a dealer charge for the cambelt and tensioner to be changed? Is it a big job?

Sweet, nowhere near as bad as i was expecting.

Ill maybe get it done before the required time with all these horror stories!

Can the rattle/squeaking eventually lead to failure? Or is it literally just the annoyance of it?
