Title: Damaged engine
Post by: Kieran1990gti on July 29, 2016, 09:45:38 am
So today I found out that my engine had a blocked pick up pipe in the past and that the vw specialist said it had a damaged engine because of it. Is there any way of telling if the engine was actually damaged, the owner before me didn't want to spend the money getting it investigated so damage caused is unknown.

Was gutted when I was told as all i phoned up for was a timing belt change

Id want a bit more proof than that. how did he know it was damaged??

was it driving fine before? any smoke or oil lights? loud on tick over?

That's what worried me. Car runs fine only slightly white smoke but that only started when I went decatted exhaust.
The engine does rattle a bit but another mechanic thought a tensioner

Definitely take it to another garage for a second opinion.
Or if your handy with a socket set, jack the car up, drain the oil, take out the sump bolts, drop the sump and look for yourself. the pickup pipe is about 12 quid i think.

Decat will smoke on start up if its cold outside. once its warm, you should be able to tell the difference

The pick up pipe has been changed 2x in the last 15 months. The first time was with the previous owner and I only found this out by chance.
I do find it hard to believe a garage can tell engine damage from zero investigation.
Regards to another garage this is the top specialists in the Highlands

I think the word VW specialist floats around too much tbh.

oif its been changed twice in under a year then I wouldnt worry about it. unless you change your oil every year etc.

I wouldnt worry about it mate
