When i bought my GTi over a year ago they were covered in oil...
used metal polish and elbow grease lol however wasnt seeing much of a difference
used oven clean on there and that got rid of a lot (remaining is mainly on the tip, around the exhaust is pretty clean)
what else can i use for this

try using 0000 grade wire wool mate plus autosol plus elbow grease of course - works for me. a coat of wax makes cleaning them next time a lot easier... there was a thread about fitting new tips over the top of the original ones somewhere on here.. audi ones i think.. if all else fails...

I spent hours trying to get mine looking good.
In the end I paid £20 delivered for some tips that go over the top off ebay. They look the part :happy2:

Paint them black.... then you never have to worry about them
-
What did you use to apply the metal polish?
I used Fairy liquid with wire wool, then Autosol with wire wool, then finally Autosol with a cloth. Didn't take long and the results were pretty good. Wire wool took care of most of the dirt.

Quite a few threads on this. Think the consensus is that once the tips are 'gone' beyond a certain point, you're p*ssing in the wind.
Autosol is quite good, as long as whatever you're cleaning/polishing isn't heavily corroded. I think the standard tips are mild steel? That won't help.
Just get the standard system off a for a full 3" jobbie. Perfect excuse.
