Title: DSG and high mileage cars

Now I've never had a DSG box but fancy going for one withy my next car.

What are the issues with higher mileage cars, as in what is likely to wear or need replacing as a car approaches 100k?

I know many Gti's have had new clutches at much less than 100k (manual cars) but what if the DSG clutch goes? Are they replaceable, any advice on DSG ownership on an 8 year old higher mileage car much appreciated.

Not as much issues as you would think. there are alot of high mileage DSG engines about.
the important thing is to make sure that the DSG oil is changes on time. I think its every 20k or maybe 40k.....Can remember, google it.

Of course you do get some people with unfortunate issues where the metatronics goes faultly and needs changing......

I have DSG and wouldnt think of going back to manual again.

What high mileage cars do we have on here. Wonder how many miles these DSG boxes can be good for when looked after.

They are not as unreliable as when they first came out. They had some time to improve on stuff as I think the dsg box first came out in 2004.

But if you do get a problem then it's not the case of a new box. Lots of places now specialise in the ecu part of it and you can get the clutch plates changed but they should in theory last the life of the car.

I think I read a recent thread where someone was quoted 3k to fix the mechatronics?! I might be wrong (hope I am for the sake of anyone in that position) but that's quite a lump to shell out just to get a gearbox working.

It's the one and only thing that put me off looking at DSG cars before I bought mine. As it happens, the manual is one of the best boxes I've used. Apart from having to uprate the clutch (DSG clutchpacks are good for well over 400lb/ft apparently) it's perfect. Good positive feel, and the ratios are bang on.

There's no denying the DSG makes a quick car quicker though. I went out in Hurdy's old R and the acceleration was constant, and relentless, until he lifted off. The burps/farts are pretty cool too.

I'd imagine the 40k service does nothing to ensure the reliability of the actual mechatronics unit? It'd help to see some statistics, as in the percentage of DSG cars with mechatronics failure. No idea how you'd get accurate figures on that though!

Nah you can get a mechatronic unit sent off to ecu testing to be repaired for about 600/700 I think. Not cheap or not mega expensive I know but at least there are more companies out there now with the knowledge to help.

And with most stuff, you only hear about the bad stuff on forums, not the good as much  :happy2:

I love my dsg and could never go back to a manual now. I read somewhere that boost doesn't drop off either like when you are in a manual and have to dip the clutch and change gear with the revs falling etc.

And when I want to have some fun I slide the stick left to manual mode and use it like a manual car  :happy2:

125k DSG golf GTI owner here and still going strong and wouldn't want to swap it for anything else (unless it's a MK6 R..DSG Of course  :evilgrin:)

I think the best part of owning a dsg is being able to remap without worrying about the clutch as a manual and the noise from the exhaust on change up.

Got a taxi customer with 370k original dsg box on his passat. As long as the service has been done every 40k you should be ok :)

I have done 100k without servicing my dsg its on 164k now

I know it's not really that high mileage but I got a 2.0 140 bhp gt derv with 97.000 on the clock and the dsg has been perfect. Had the oil and filter changed recently at vw at cost of £170 just for peace of mind
And it feels smooth still and hopefully got lots of life still in it.  :happy2:

114k and drives fine, although PRNDS flashes on dash so may give up at anytime

I have 130k miles on my '07 dsg. Service it every 40k miles and it should last. Mine has been modified to over 285WheelHP(US) since it had 58k miles on it and ran vigorously.

Good to hear some of these stories of the cars running well over 100k.

Basically if I buy a car near the 100k mile mark I want it to have plenty of life left in it for years to come.

Does that seem reasonable as long as it's looked after. Never had a car with much mileage on the clock before, luckily the highest mileage car I've ever bought was mid 30's.

Possibly incorrectly I've always felt that once a car gets to around 100k it's coming to the end of its economic life, and you'll only have troubles from here in.
