I need some help chaps. I bought my 2005 mk5 gti 76000miles about 4 months ago and had a series of problems with it which cost me a good £1500 to sort. Since then I just can't get it out of my head that I bought the wrong car and that I should of gone down the sti route. I've had both golfs and scoobys and love em both.Since getting it stage 1 at Rtech it feels and drives faultlessly and Niki commented on how tight it felt. The problem is I think I have lost confidence in it and am always waiting for something to go wrong again. Part of me wants to keep it and modify more and part of me wants to just get rid and go the Sti route. I'd appreciate your views and opinions. Thanks for the help. This forum is a1 and it has already helped me out alot. Cheers

I'd imagine the responses you'll get on here will be a touch one sided. As they would also be, but flipped round, on a Scooby site.
Only you can realistically decide what's best for you.
Personally, I prefer not to have a cheap "farmers" interior (albeit with bucket seats). But then there is little denying the potential of the STI's engine.
Just k04 it, and you'll be happy as a pig in the back of a scooby.

Was thinking about a k03 hybrid from Bbt maybe. If I keep it.

You could quite easily sell the GTI and buy a Subaru with even more faults waiting for you. Sometimes it's better the devil you know.
My GTI is going through a bit of a difficult period, failed injector, coil pack, but I try see it as progress when I tick off these little faults, as I know I'm nearing a point where the car is very reliable with the main weak points addressed or upgraded. I still love the car. I know how well it drives when everything's working so I've never really thought about giving up on it.
-
Agree on devil you know but understand the lack of confidence in the car. STI is an awesome machine, former scooby owner myself (blobeye model) and it really was brilliant. Golf definitely feels more upmarket but there is no getting away from that flat four noise.
As said, it is what you need or prefer though. Scooby is bigger so if you have to move a lot of stuff about it can be more practical but really only you knows what you need.
-
I like the blob eye scooby like the one below but again not sure about these cars

The flat four is a great sound I must admit.

I'm not a huge fan of Subarus or Japanese stuff in general, but the 22b, R33 GTR, and Celica GT4 are three cars I've always wanted. Mate of mine has got a ridiculously clean GT4 WRC in white. Think it's running about 300bhp. Very quick. It's off the road at the minute for a bit of welding and the 500bhp stroker engine he's building!
-
Oh and add an Evo 6 Tommi Makinen to that list...
-
I'm all for the R35 and r33 gtr 2.6
my nephews mate has 5 evos two in full rebuilds m 4 evo 8's and an evo 5 with 500 bhp.
-
The thing with scooby is they are expensive to run and start running big power through them and you knock the bottom end out of them as seen loads at work
-
Need to buy one with an all forged out bottom end

The rs turbo was great back in the day. I had an Astra gte but only the 8 valve. My mates dad had the 16 valve. Tosser. I also had an Orion 1.6i ghia. Good times.

If I did go down the scooby route I would probably get an import again as the engines are alot tougher and rev higher. They are mostly free of rust and the newer ones like the Hawkeye are 2l instead of 2.5l and are cheaper to tax.

Depends how far you go. The AXX/BWA (k03 car) is fine with a k04 conversion and all the bolt ons at about 350bhp, as long as the map isn't too aggressive and the torque isn't crazy high in a big spike.
The k04 engines have a stronger bottom end and can take 400bhp+ all day long.

A safe 300 would be good tbh. A linear map with accompanying mods and I think I'd be happy. Might just keep the Golf for now and see where it goes then.

Is yours a GTI or Edition 30?
The most you'll get from a GTI (k03) within safe limits of the turbo is 285-290bhp. That's with proven Stage 2+ hardware and a good map.
K03 hybrid is a good option that's on my radar. The Beach Buggy Turbos hybrids have seen 350bhp+ on standard injectors, mapped by R-Tech. Less to change than the k04 conversion and pretty much the same power potential. It'd still be a good idea to have all the 2+ bits in place, but it could be mapped however you want, so 300bhp, bags of torque would be well within reach. It's just a case of money!

Its just a gti unfortunately. I did wmail bbt and its £850 plus vat plus delivery for a hybrid k03. I like the fact its a straight bolt on. Like you say bit by bit and then Rtech for the map. Thing is I want it all NOW!!!

Haha, I know! I'm pretty much commited to going BBT hybrid or k04. It's only a bigger intercooler and intake I need before I'm at full 2+ hardware-wise and then I can look at turbos. And I've got an uprated clutch in.
To be fair it's plenty quick at Stage 2 (270bhp ish) but once you start tuning it's hard to stop!

Tell me about it. I'm only Rtech stage 1 with all the usual upgrades and a healthy car and I am constantly checking what to do next. Addictive stuff. It doesn't help I've got an addictive personality:):)

Modifying cars is one of the better addictions to be in the clutches of!
I just hope that once I'm in the 300s I don't keep wanting more and more. I'll be honest, I have looked at full k04 engine swaps... but I stopped myself before the idea got hold of me!

Cough cough that's the 'bugeye'. They tweaked it because people didn't like it so much.
This was my 'blobeye'. 275bhp with a map, exhaust and filter. 30+mpg too which is amazing for a car with that kind of power. Fairly cheap to run as well I thought. Change the oil, run the car sensibly with a warm up and warm down and no problems.

No it would not as the bottom ends have forged pistons I believe or someone tell me I'm wrong.
The mk1 tt had forged pistons but the con rods weren't. As always the JP's are a lot stronger with more bhp from factory de tuned for UK emissions?. The estate had 280bhp and we're rapid motors. :signLOL: ugly but nice.

Yeah bug eye  thought I was talking out me :booty: :signLOL:

Blobeye Estate you mean. Grandpa:):)
Sportwagon you young whipper snapper! We needed 4x4 back in my day... it was all fields.... ;)
Re emissions, I deleted one of the three cats on the car, added 50bhp, got better mpg and still passed the MOT. This is what happens when you let people who know what they are doing manage the engines instead of politicians.

 is all I can say I remember the one down the tracks in bullring back in the day was razzing out the scene along with a rs turbo series 2 I miss those days.
The rs turbo was great back in the day. I had an Astra gte but only the 8 valve. My mates dad had the 16 valve. Tosser. I also had an Orion 1.6i ghia. Good times.

I had a white valver back in the day. Was an epic machine. Loved it. Had to get rid before I lost my license as a young lad though.

I just fell in love with the digital dash they had and the recaro seats. They had lovely mattig body kits wide arch.
Then I bought a fiat uno turbo mk1 and fitted digital clocks into that awesome little motor. Only sold the clock last year to some lad in ebay after 14 years of sitting around in the house. :signLOL:
would love to own all the old classic motors again 205 1.9 gti uno turbo renault 5 gt turbo love those cars and proper quick too.

My Blob STI PPP - was Andy Forest mapped was around 360bhp.
Was all the power you'd need to be honest. I'd no problems in my ownership.
Totally different cars to GTIs - great handling, faster out the box - from a standstill especially.
Drawbacks - fuel economy, dearer insurance, poor quality interior, the slightly chavvy image that comes with them.
I've always ended back in GTIs when I've tried other cars. The best of all worlds in my opinion.

Very nice :happy2:
You're right about the drawbacks though. same with the evos imports are way more on the tax band and insurance fuel economy and parts lol. wife doesn't like the bulge on the bonnet high level spoiler and noisy exhaust. :sad1:

Looks and sounds so good though. Quite a draw even with the chavvy image. Lol

I parked right next to a blob today in a car park in Bournemouth exactly like that and the Misses took the piss out of it and said it was a kids car and said if I get one she thinks I will look like a twat. I spose she's got a point. I see blokes in their mid 40s driving round in Subarus and it doesn't quite look right. The gti is more grown up I think and the interior is defiantly more refined. If I get an sti I think I will be in it on my own alot.

It's the kid in us that has us buying GTIs and Subarus and spending thousands making them go faster and look better. Can't honestly say any of it is rational or sensible, but it's lots and lots of fun!!
Saw my old man the other day, showing him the latest upgrades and that, and he said "aren't you a bit old to be a boy racer?!"
Obviously I put him straight and told him I wasn't a boy racer, but an 'enthusiast'...
I am 35 though. So maybe he's got a point. But sod his point!

Saw an old boy in a deep red M5 up at Turbary Retail Park, Bournemouth, near the Range, a couple of weeks back Craig - must have been early 70's (the old boy - not the car), and I thought fair play to you, still got it at that age.... was hoping he'd rag it up the car park, but very safely done.... Once it's in you.... Ha ha
-
Sod age! I'm 32 and still as enthusiastic about cars when I was 17. I blame my dad who is an absolute petrol head, he's looking at getting a TVR Griffith 500 :notworthy:

A year and a half back I had a middle aged bloke race me off every traffic light on the A40 towards the motorway and he just couldn't keep up in his poxy porsche 3.6 :signLOL: proves it's not the car but thr driver :driver: 265bhp tt quattro verses 300bhp carrera 4s stupid show offs in thier high end cars they can't even drive
