Had my cambelt changed at the local stealers a couple weeks back and apparently they had issues printing off my free health check. More like they didn't do it.
Any way, took it back down there yesterday so they could actually do it and one of the things they hightlighted was my wheel bearing was knackered. No real shock, it's been a bit noisy for a few weeks now.
They kindly gave me a quote of £283 for a new wheel bearing which almost made me spit my complimentary coffee in the sales assistants face in shock. Having spent out just under £500 in the last couple weeks on a cambelt I can't really stomach giving the stealers another £300 so soon.
Does anyone have a rough idea on what I should expect to pay a VAG specialist for a wheel bearing supplied and fitted? I only ask as I called a local specialist to do the cambelt and he quoted me almost £100 MORE than the stealers!! :confused:
Any help would greatly appreciated :happy2:

I was quoted £370 from an Indy to supply and fit 2 front bearings.

Pretty sure OEM bearings are £115 +/- per side...

I agree. It sounds a lot, but quality aftermarket bearings (I'm talking bearing and hub/carrier here) are around the £80 mark, so not a bad price fitted. Bearing and hub/carrier can be had for around £35 if you want to try the cheapest.

Cheapest I would avoid.
Have seen lots of posts, saying non genuine hubs / carriers ect. are not made to same standards, tolerances not as precise, causing problems with the speed ring sensor getting confused and throwing up abs fault errors

Hi Ady!
Yeah, I avoided them on the rear of mine for that reason. I have two front alloy hubs sitting in the shed and will replace the bearings on those before fitting with decent ones.

I'd budget around £160 upwards for bearings only, bud.

I'd say you're looking around £180 for the pair + vat. we are talking oem after all and vw :signLOL:

This might be a stupid question but.....
If a wheel bearing is on the way out is it just noisy or can you feel play in the wheel when on a hoist? :rolleye:

Not in all cases and depends on severity of the bearing. I replaced my old motor ones as they started to wobble on braking and stupidly replaced the drive shafts first as I didn't feel the play in the wheels :doh:.
the rear one was humming after a whole so replaced both of those too.
