Hi guys, I'm just in the process of upgrading the front component speakers in my Golf.
My car came from the factory with the 10 speakers as standard so I have the 4" Mids fitted along with the 6.5 bass units and obviously the tweeters in the mirror triangles. I've just been looking at my door cards in preparation for removing them on Saturday, and just noticed something a little strange. When I look at the grill for my 4" Mid range (near the window switches), the grill is fully drilled (perforated if you like). However, when I looked at the lower grill for the 6.5" Bass unit, most of the holes in the grill haven't been opened up, almost as if the moulding procedure didn't finish it too well. I've attached pictures below to explain what I mean.
Is everyone's car like this or just mine? Would there be any detriment to the sound (bass) in having them behind a grill that wasn't fully opened up?

When I install the speakers at the weekend and remove the door cards, should I finish the opening up of these holes with a small drill in my dremmel?
Thanks
Andrew

i think its done for rigidity and strength? as in, those areas are prone to take a beating
i could be wrong though, often am :innocent:

Now, im no expert. but heres My theory.
Mids will need he holes due to the frequency output. they will struggle to get thru solid objects, hence being drilled.
Bass freq's wont struggle half as much getting thru a grill like that without being drilled. as its pretty low, it needs strength to stop your foot going thru it.
I very much doubt you will hear a difference

yeah agreed i dont think youd hear a difference if your setup is good
mine can make your eyes vibrate and your nose itch at full stink and i didnt drill mine out :happy2:

Ahem...cough.... Standard MFD2.
But I've "acquired" a set of Focal Polyglass 165VR3's from a friend. These are going to be fitted at the weekend, then the MFD2 is going to be amped next month.

cant go wrong with focal polyglass :happy2:
do you need an amp?

who me? (click on my project link over there <-----)

if you drill the grills they will vibrate to much--you will not really notice the difference

Please don't drill anything...no matter how hard you try it'll look naff. Plus you run the risk of increasing the risk of rattles and squeaks...

If you fit the speakers don't forget to Dynamat / EDead the doors. I think you need to.
