Hi,
I have an RNS510 as a factory fit in my 58reg Pirelli and just wanted to know whether I should be considering updating software etc?
I have VCDS and it is:-
part number 1T0035680B
HW VERSION H03
SW VERSION 0900
With V3 2008 mapping
I have no idea what canbus if fitted, don't fancy crawling around on my back to pull it out just to see, can this be done with my VCDS?
What are the gains with updating? speed? 7 digit post code??
I am very confused over which update are safe/worth doing

Not worth doing anything to it to be honest. Had the same one in mine and it was just so old and clunky, it became a chore to use.
Best thing to do is flog yours on ebay and upgrade to a newer one. Q and above, you don't need to worry about changing the CAN-BUS, and the newer the revision, the faster and better it is in general. The R & S flavours with SSD hard drive are particularly good.

I was debating whether this might be a good idea.
The newer ones are LED aren't they?
Sorry, probably me being thick, what are R & S? Agree SSD will be better if I can get one already fitted, run all my computers with SSD, much faster :happy2:

Not thick at all! We all have to learn from the beginning
Yeah newer ones are LED.
Sorry, the letters denote the revision number, for example yours is: 1T0035680B. Q, R, S etc would be 1T0035680Q, 1T0035680R, 1T0035680S and so on!
Same unit has been revised soooooooo many times over the years, which is great :happy2:
I have a 1T0035680Q in mine with the standard 2007 CAN-BUS gateway and I've left it at Gatwick for 2 weeks, no problem, started on first turn!

Given that you can update it for free (or if you can't be bothered searching for the maps, just get them for about a tenner on eBay), there is no reason not to. My 2008 car has maps that were well out of date and for the sake of an hour of messing about I now have up to date maps and firmware.
Have a look on this blog for a guide and tips...

Although a little clunky, it's not such a bad sat nav effort, and works with putting directions on the dash too. And as someone else mentioned, VW have kept updating the same basic unit for years, so even though it's a decade old, we still get updates!
