Looking at getting the cambelt and tensioner changed on my GTI as its just turned 70K. What sort of price should i be looking at to pay?
Rang the dealers today, they have a (special) offer on at the moment and will do it for £295 which i found quite excessive considering the belt is £35 and a tensioner is £65.
-
thats what mine came to at VW Leeds.
They will match an indy though as long as you get a written quote.
-
It’s a big job apparently. I got talking to the technician who did mine and because there is not a lot of space in the engine bay they have to disconnect the drive shafts and exhaust. This then gives them enough room to carry out the change over.
-
That seems very reasonable in my opinion! :happy2:
-
Yep mine is in next thursday and being charged £295, they started at £335 but got them down a bit, try your luck but the price they have given is fairly standard imo
-
Mine will be 340 Inc vat plus wAter pump next tues so I would say that's not bad

Ive paid £295 on my anni, paid it twice now, still only on 56k but i wasnt happy with something, didnt want it going pop lol.
-
Best quote i've managed to get is £415 including water pump after a little haggling. Mine needs doing in May but i'm happy to get it done earlier if i can get a £295 ish deal locally!
-
I was quoted £520 by my stealer only last saturday.... I would jump at the chance of £295! I think the parts alone come to more than £100 and its a 4 hour job.
-
Got mine done at the dealers other week, Cam belt and water pump for £349.97, girl on the service desk said I wouldn't have even got it that cheap if I worked there!
-
I got a 3rd Variable service, Cambelt & Water pump change and DS2500's fitted by Mitchells Skoda at Cheshire Oaks for £646 all in.
Just ring around and then tell your nearest dealer the best price (you could even get it wrong by about £20 :innocent:) and they will usually price match. It's what i always do
Carl :happy2:
-
Ive managed to get the price down to £262 at my local dealers. :happy2:
Thats for a cambelt+tensioner+fitting!
Anyone know the price of a water pump as i may get that done while they are on with car!?
-
About £100 extra Inc fitting
Carl :happy2:
-
£420 main dealers
£330 Star performance
Both are including the water pump, Star P will give me a bit of a discount i think because i use them so much
-
4 hour job . i work for a vw main dealer aswell as havin a gti. it didnt take me no where near 4 hours and i didnt touch my drive shafts or exhaust. i would love to see some of these techs doing these cambelt changes. people moan about this belt somethingsilly about space but its really not that hard if your abit cleaver about things.
-
About £100 extra Inc fitting
Carl :happy2:
Parts only £40 ish and by the time they've stripped the cambelt its about 2 minutes extra work :stupid:
-
Well I was quoted £546 without and £646 with so when I went to school that's £100
I'll see if I can dig out the receipt for the service tomorrow and see how much the part was etc
Carl :happy2:

Not doubting you were charged that. Just pointing out you were robbed
-
Ive been told by the dealers that is around £100 extra for the water pump to be replaced while they are on with the cambelt, but guess what..........Not a single water pump available in the UK until the end of March!!!
-
^^ Not that I'm naive in the way of stealers but I'm pretty shocked they are charging so much extra for this when it is literally a 2 minute job to switch water pumps once the belt is out of the way. Definately worth trying to blag this as a parts only cost when you book the job.
-
That was my plan, no way would i pay an extra £50 to have them fit it. Not sure what to do now tho?? My cars at 70K and has not had a cambelt change. Its booked in next week to be done but if i want a genuine vw water pump i will have to wait till the end of March!
Is it vital to replace the water pump? Do they have a history of failing???
-
Get them to inspect the pump. If it shows any since of leaking ( which mine was ever so slightly ) get it changed.
If it all looks fine leave it but get them to put on the paperwork pump inspected and fine.
Might be worth trying a Skoda,Seat or Audi dealer as the pump I'd the same for all makes afaik I got mine done no problem with about 4 days notice.
Carl :happy2:
-
I paid £380 at my local dealer for the full cambelt kit and water pump change, was originally £280 for just the belt but got the tensioners, idlers and water pump done for an extra £100.
Strange the pumps are out of stock for so long, have you tried Euro Car Parts?
-
How do i find out the engine code on my car and what audi/skoda/seat engines have the same as mine??
-
The pump will have the same part number for all brands, so the Octavia vRS, A3, TT, Leon FR etc water pump will also be on back order. It'd be worth ringing the dealers to see if they stock it, or try your local TPS branch who could also stock it.
-
£31.68 for a pump. :surprised:
so that's £70 :fighting: to fit the bloody thing
Will post up the part no. Later when I get back home.

Where do we recommend in West Yorks? Started a new work contract and the miles are going to mount up.
Nearly 5 years old & 53K and belts haven't been done yet.
The water pump may be the source of the disappearing coolant too.
Could be asking for trouble in the near future.
Tesco extended warranty may be in order just in case
BTW anyone seen the eBay auction for the full cam belt kit. Think it was £110 buy it now from a South Yorks dealer. I will check for the link?

I know I'm reviving an old thread but my car just turned 4 years old and it's now got 40k on the clock so I have been told I need to do the cam belt and a SG oil/filter change. I got quoted £500 for the cam belt and £225 for the DSG oil/filter change from Windrush VW in Maidenhead, which seems expesive compared to some of the prices quoted in this thread. That did not include the water pump. I got an indi to quote as well and they came in at £665 for everything including the water pump and the auxiliary belt - Still bloody expensive!
Anyone know of anywhere in the Berkshire area where I can get this work done for a more reasonable sum of money?
-
I've had a few quotes so far, midland Vw do it for £295 plus £45 to do water pump and water. Stafford and stoke Audi are doing it for £275 at the moment. It also listed on my local Vw dealers site at £299 so seems like an average price round my way.
-
Stafford Audi are advertising cambelt and tensioner for £249 here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VOLKSWAGEN-CAMBELT-VW-FOUR-CYL-POLO-GOLF-LUPO-PASSAT_W0QQitemZ380075065026QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item587e3d3ec2
The offer is for any 4 cylinder VW and covers the GTI too.
Hope this helps...
-
I think theres a difference in the job if its an AXX engine compared to the BPY? engine...
always worth alerting the garage to your engine code....think its something to do with the cover design.... (as usual light on facts me :signLOL:)
-
Cheers guys, looks like I'll be heading up the M6 at some point soon then...
-
Just spoke top Ridgeway in reading, they want £410 for the cambelt and £110 for the DSG oil/filter - I gave them the price from Stafford Audi for the cambelt and they are going to see if they can match it - Waiting for the phone to ring (with my fingers crossed) now...

wow, that's good value. Wonder if I can get an s3 as the loan car while the work is carried out? Guys, is the battery disconnected while the work is carried out?
-
Okay, so as well as doing the DSG work for £110, Ridgeway VW in Reading have now offered to do the cambelt for £299 - Which is a result, doesn't include the water pump, so just waiting to hear back on a price for that, but otherwise, very very pleased with that. My original quote (from Windrush VW in Maidenhead) was £725 and I've now managed to get this down to £409... Not bad at all!
-
Stafford Audi did my wifes Edition 30 about a month ago....£329 all in...cambelt,tensioner and water pump. Had to wait for the car which was a 3 1/2 hour job..
-
Hi...Everyone...

-
It's about £40 for the Pump
Carl :happy2:
-
My local indy garage quoted me the following yesterday:
timing belt inc tensioners: £65.13
water pump: £85.14
antifreeze: £24.99
Fitting: 114.94
Total: £290.20
Not bad I thought
-
My local dealer has a notice saying £250 for a cambelt change for all 2.0 FSI engines.... not sure if it includes all the bits you listed though.
-
i did mine myself it cost me £120 in bits but i also bought the later belt covers which were a extra $40
-
ED30 engine has the same belt/tensioner/pump as the standard GTI?
