having recently come across to mk6 from mk5 gti. we picked car up on Saturday and was perfect drove. lovely got up to it today and it was lazing starting after about 15 secs it fires up but it sounds like a bag off nails and belt from the alternater is not even spinning round at all can any one shed any light on what this could be really desperate to find out what it is before garage picks it back up as we are wondering whether or not to just get our money back from them or let them fix it but unsure how good it will be after fix if you get my drift

Check alternator or air pump not siezed
-
could that honestly be making the engine sound like it's got a bag off nails in it honestly
-
Hard to tell with out lookin at it
See what garage says the fault is then if it is serious thanet your money back

was just trying to arm my self with some information just in case they bodge a fix together then send car back to me if you no what I mean

Alternator belt not spinning sounds to me like either the alternator itself it bust or it's adjoining parts i.e. pulley/bearings/belt
If the alternator is bust and it tries to turn, it can give off an awful noise that would scare all the cats in the neighbourhood away.
It could have been sitting up for an awful long time and then it just seized but if it's running a few hours and the belt is moving just fine then I would keep record of it with the dealer and ask for a full guaranteed refund if it comes back!

the car start up but has got a slight delay but when it does it sounds terrible and belt just don't move at all mate

If the alternator belt isn't moving at all then it's probably bust.
Can you spin the belt on the alternator?
I would personally walk away unless they're willing to fit a new unit. They could throw a reconditioned alternator in there for £100 and it could go bang also!
