So, I never did Martial Arts as a kid, but see there is a lot of choice for your kids these days - karate, kung fu, ju jitsu, tae kwon do?
Just want something that will be enjoyable with the emphasis on self defence and not kicking someones head in?
Any ideas form people who do martial arts on here or have enrolled there kids in a class?

Shotokan would be my suggestion. The OG of karate. It's all about discipline, learning correct technique, learning the katas, and emphasises self defense rather than aggression.
I did Shotokan for quite some time when I was young, got one belt away from black. God knows why I quit! Typical rebellious teenager thing I guess.

My daughter has been doing Taekwondo from the age of 4.5 years. She really enjoys it and you go through the belts. She is aiming for the 2nd one at the moment. To be honest the grading is pretty tough especially for the youngesters as it does involve theory. Lucky my wife deals with that

Okinawa Goju-Ryu Karate-Do. Really complete martial art and very traditional when well taught.

Plenty of videos on YouTube with Sensei Morio Higaonna that explain the basis of that karate style.

Tae Kwondo is decent. keeps them in lines and let them know its for self defence, not for kicking the $%^& out of everyone lol
Alot of kids these days are getting into MMA. This caters to more than 1 form of martial arts Hence MMA-Mixed Martial arts)
It also includes alot of ground work and grappling which is compulsory in an altercation. well worth looking into
