Title: Bathroom Downlighters?
Post by: Juliand on September 14, 2016, 09:55:03 pm
Gordon Bennett... second one of these gone in less than a year. Not just the halogen bulb, but the fitting at the end of the wires, where the bulb plugs in.... just seems to go corroded with the steam / vapour. I replaced one, just..... as the white cable was just about long enough for me to fit a tiny two core  cable connector and then wire in a new white cable fitting, but now another one has gone kapput...... the bulbs are fine, so it must be the fitting... PITA. Can you pull the whole unit  down from the ceiling to give more access to the cables???? my podgy fingers dont leave much room otherwise.

Struggling to work it out.....

Thanks

Replace them with decent downlighters. Then forget about them.

Thanks for the comments.

When you say replace with decent ones, what do you suggest - make / type - anything I should look for?

Some that are IP54 rated at the very least.

As rich says IP rated. Then decide whether to go LED or halogen. Also being a bathroom low voltage aswell. But if your unsure what to do/get, get a decent spark in to do it

I fitted 17 :phew: of these in my kitchen last summer https://www.downlights.co.uk/halers-h2-pro.html they are excellent, I'm about to fit/order 5 for my bathroom - they are a quality product.

Definitely consider LED lamps too, they hardly heat up and that takes away part of your problem. They use about 3-5w, compared to 35-50w for halogen - the bodies are a small heatsink to dissipate heat generated by halogens.

LAP GU10 ones at Screwfix are good value, for example.
