Title: Battery drain after fitting handsfree kit..
Post by: Gmac on September 19, 2016, 01:13:07 pm
Afternoon all!..

So I've just fitted a parrot handsfree kit to the car.  I'm getting battery drain.

Car is an '05 plate gti. The head unit is the original MFD2 and I got the SOT iso harness from eBay for the mk5 (one that doesn't included adapter/wiring for mfsw.  The red power cable from the sot harness is wired to the fuse panel using 'slot 10' which I tested and supllies 12v when ignition is turned on.  There is no power to the parrot when the keys aren't turned on.

Why would I now be getting battery drain?  Is there something that I haven't done?

TIA :happy2:

Take it you had no problems before the parrot kit was installed
Just wondering if you need to change your can bus or up date it

Yep..

Does it switch off properly... as in saying "goodbye" or does it just go dead?

It's the ck3100 model. I'd need to check to see if it says goodbye, but I've got a funny feeling it doesn't. :happy2: :happy2:

If it doesn't then you have it wired in incorrectly. You need to double check the permenant live and switched live feeds.

It just goes dead.  Not sure what two feeds these are.  I've used the red cable and wired that to a switched live in the fuse panel.  That's all I've done.  What/where is the permanent live?

Oddly enough, I've just been out to the car now, expecting it not to start, but it showed no sign of drain! Weird!!

The parrot needs 2 feeds.

Perm live
Switched live.

Usually one is red and one is orange.

Thanks for the reply fellas.

So I need to figure out which wire is which, ie is red switched live and orange perm. And then wire accordingly. Or the wires the same until you wire them up?

So, been doing some more reading and it could be that we are getting our wires crossed! Lol.  I've read that some VW/audis need to have the parrot red and orange fused wires swapped over with each other, ie the parrot red goes to orange and the orange goes to red.  These wires having nothing to do with the red and orange wires that are part of the sot harness, which is what I was talking about being (red) wired to a switched terminal in the fuse box.

Does this sound right? A swap could sort the problem?

I'm sure there is something about the swapping of the wires in the instructions

I bought this parrot kit off of a friend, who also bought it second hand, it doesn't have instructions unfortunately.

Does my last post tie in with what you were saying about the two colours, ie they are part of the parrot kit?

Yes.

Going from memory there should be red and orange power cables.

On the Parrot loom it should have a fuse for both cables so easiest way is to change over the fuse holder caps as they are on the supply side and hopefully this should solve the issue.

Thanks folks. Yeh the parrot loom has the fused red and orange, so I'll whip out the stereo again and swap them over.  Strangely, the car has started fine the last two mornings, although I'm putting this down to it not having quite enough time to drain the battery enough so that it doesn't start.  The run in to work is about 30 mins so that gives it a good charge too. :happy2:

I shall report back after I've swapped the red and orange.  May help others in the future.

Whipped the stereo out again today and changed over the parrot red and orange fused wires...

Noticed straight away that the parrot head unit bit said disconnected and goodbye when I turned the ignition off.  So hopefully this will have sorted the battery drain!

Pics......

Red to red and orange to orange...

Pull the loom out.... test to see if you still have drain. Could it be a faulty parrot unit?

Yeh, think that's what I'll do.  I suppose with a couple of battery drains it could have buggered the battery itself.

Back to square one, and then go from there..

Do you need a new CAM BUS?

Didn't realise i hadn't updated this thread!

Since fitting a new battery, the battery drain has gone. i think what had happened was the initial drain on the battery when the handsfree was plugged in the wrong, on the rd and orange ignition wires, must have tipped the old battery over the edge and it was never going to recover properly. So a change on the orange and red wires coupled with the new battery and everything has been fine for weeks now!! :happy2: :happy2:
