Hi,
My wife's motor has the ESP warning light on permanently. Had it scanned and it came up with the G201 code. I picked up a full 2nd hand abs sensor unit from a breakers and fitted it. I don't have any diagnostics kit so took it to a local garage who do and they weren't able to do the abs bleed needed to get the system working (still got very soft brakes and both abs & esp lights on). One of the mechs said that he thought these units were coded to individual vehicles so you can't just get a second hand one. I've read that it's the mechanical side to these units that fail. If that's the case, can i swap the old electronic part off the one I took off to the motor for the one that came on the second hand unit, and will that solve it?
Alternatively I guess it's a case of getting a repair kit.

I'm guessing u mean abs pump if so yes they are coded to the car, it will probably have been the pressure sensor inside the pump that has gone. Best thing to do is plug the old unit in retrieve the code and copy it over to the replacement unit or work it out using this link

Swapped over the electronic parts, manually bled the system, both abs and esp lights went out after a short drive...then came back on. Brakes are still spongy so I'm guessing I need to get the motor hooked up to a VCDS system to bleed the brakes that way.

Ye needs plugging in mate and fault code reading I wouldn't of thought a spongy pedal would put the light on tho
