Title: Seized engine on my bkd GTs
Post by: HandyAndy on September 26, 2016, 10:47:19 pm
On Thursday night last week I got to the car and it wouldn't start, I'd had starter issues and had fitted a new (reconditioned) Bosch unit on the Tuesday that week.

Anyhow, I got started with a jump start and went to the local halfords who checked the battery and said it tested good, but low on charge, it needs charging and it'll be OK. So I drove 45 ish miles back home and put my battery on charge after disconnecting it from the car.

Friday morning I got go it and same as the night before, it just went clunk. No sign of turning over or anything, I charged the battery a little longer and still the same. A friend came and we tried to jump it off her focus, nothing, just the same.

So after calling the garage I have used before, the mechanic suggested it must be the alternator given the information and that a new battery wouldn't go amiss too. So I got the alternator and battery from Euro car parts and proceeded to fit them. Still it wouldn't start or even turn over. I tried jumping it again and nothing, I checked the battery and the old one I had charged up was a higher voltage. So I used that as a slave and still nothing, just a clicking sound.

Eventually it started to turn over and at this point the garage called back, I spoke to a different mechanic and he was adamant that the starter was at fault and it needed changing despite being fitted less than a week. So off I went to Euro car parts again with the starter motor and they swapped it for a new one. Once fitted I tried it again and it turned over but wouldn't start, then the message, 'stop engine low oil pressure' came up on the dash.

So, I got it go the garage and they looked at it today, the engine would not budge, even removing the starter motor, as this can stick in line with the flywheel and prevent the engine turning.

Question is what can be done now, sell it for parts? Break it myself? Or try and trade it in? It's essential that I can get to work 38 miles away, but I don't really have time to mess around breaking it. Are there any specialist breakers out there. I'm in Derbyshire.

Thanks for looking.

So what the hell happened?

Car runs fine but didn't start unless it got jumped, to total seized engine?

Hi unzippy, I only wish I knew, it's totally baffled me and all those who have heard. It was fine until the nigly starting issues, then I thought it was fixed by swapping the starter motor, but then it became worse to start, I guess if the oil pump had failed and it was not able to circulate the oil correctly, then the oil in the engine wasn't going through the intercooler and being circulated it may have got too hot and slowly the engine parts must have finally seized it up??

I'm only guessing but a mate at work had a 2.0tdi Passat, that cost him iro £460 to replace a £7 oil pump drive shaft, because the impeller on it rounded off the shafts hexagonal section to make it slip and that caused the impeller to not circulate the oil. He was more fortunate in that he got it diagnosed and fixed, I guess I found out the hard way. No warning other than starting issues.

Just for your info, an intercooler doesn't circulate oil on a car. It cools air.

Cheers for putting me right Craig. I thought the pipe to it was a little large to  e carrying oil.

The car has been part ex'd now  :happy2: :happy2:
