Hello everyone! Been on here a little while and thought it was time to get my build thread together!
Back in July 2015 I picked up my 2.0L FSI Golf - my new pride and joy! Saw it and completely fell in love with it - between the votex body kit and the clean cream leather interior (as well as driving beautifully, good service history etc), I couldn't say no!
But of course I couldn't keep it just as it was, so the modifications began one by one, after I got it Serviced and MOT'd. I may get the order slightly wrong below but you'll get the idea!
Modifications so far:
- Upgraded sound system Rockford Fosgates all round & Sub and Amp install
- Tinted front and rear
- Upgraded battery
- Installed puddle lights
- Upgraded all lights to white LED
- LED Numberplate light
- Angel eye projectors and 6000k HIDs fitted
- Custom catback exhaust fitted ("quiet-sport") by R-Tec
- One of my favourite modifications and I must say the guys at R-Tec were pretty awesome! I spent a good while telling what my concerns and how I wanted the car to sound. I was worried as hell that it'd be too loud and a constant drone, but I couldn't be happier! It's quiet and civilized when I'm stuck in traffic (I live in London, so: always) or if I'm driving family around, but makes a lovely noise when you drive a little more spiritedly. Also makes the back end of the car look great!
- K&N Air Filter
- Toyo Proxes fitted all round
- Great rubber, makes so much difference to the ride and handling of the car!
- Lowered 40mm on Eibachs
- Looks and handled better, although it's not a massive fan of big speed humps (esp with the votex kit).
- Personalised number plates fitted
- Lots of detailing and polishing!
Now at this point I must apologise because I am a) useless at taking before and after pics and b) pretty useless at being a photographer anyway, so please bare with me!
Current Situation:

Interior Shot: Yes, cream leather is a royal pain to keep clean!
Onto some of the changes / pics:
Number plate lights - half and half. Makes a real difference and freshens up the look of the car.

Interior lights and puddles (sorry I can't seem to get it to upload rotated!)

Once I let it get very dirty..
But then cleaned her up properly on a friend's driveway:

Two bucket method, Iron X'd, Clay'd, SRP then EGP. Wheels cleaned with AG's Clean Wheels and Tyres and Plastrics Dressed.
Recently started using AG's Ultra Deep Shine (in place of SRP and EGP) which is a little more difficult to apply / wipe off than SRP but IMO gives better results and seems to last longer, so worth it! Typically I'll do a clean every fortnight (weather depending of course), pretty much the same as the above steps but minus the Iron X and Clay.

(Sorry for weird rotating!)

Also machined polished some of the light swirls and scuffs. Spent a lot of time researching online and reading up on techniques etc and eventually took the plunge! Got a DAS6 Pro and I haven't regretted it! Got some Meguiars polish which works a treat on the Golf paintwork. Highly recommend this.
After my first attempt, I was pleased but not overjoyed with the results. After further reading up online and being critical of myself, I realized it's because I didn't do enough passes and not used enough polish. So attempt Number 2 was more successful and definitely improved the results. No doubt still lots to learn though!
Before / After to give an example of a scuff on the driver's side door (looks like someone was kind enough to open their door into my car!)

I'm going to use the Machine for applying SRP before the winter hits - anyone had any experience with this? I've read online you can do it so wondering if anyone here had any tips etc?
Pre-Exhaust:

Probably my favourite modification! Looks and sounds great, and definitely feels like it's freed up the engine to deliver more power!
And some general pics from my recent Wales Roadtrip:

Anyways, I hope that's a good enough start for you guys and a good summary. I'll keep the thread going with more pics that I need to dig out and a few step-by-step before/after detailing pics too.
Be great to get your feedback on what I've done so far and suggestions for what's next!
-
welcome to the forum and a brilliant introduction build thread, excellent mods you have done. The Votex front splitter is rare to find now and so is the golf with cream interior
-
Welcome to the forum and great intro :happy2:
Car looks greats and the votex kit looks spot on:driver:
-
Lovely work done so far! :congrats:
Welcome :happy2:
-
Thanks guys for the positive feedback!
The votex kit was one of the major selling points of the car - the non-votex FSI's etc look too plain for me.
So: what should I do next?
-
Liking the look of the exhuast man. I'd say ED30 / R32 rear lights, it took me a while to get some and really should've done it sooner
-
Welcome to the forum. Nice spec and good mods so far. Which part of London are you from?

Thank you! And good shout on the ED30 / R32 rear lights, I've been debating between buying online (ebay) but they're not the cheapest mod in the world. Considering going for a DIY but scared I'll overdo it!

Thanks mate, appreciate it. I'm in South West / South London. How about yourself? You anywhere nearby?
-
Maybe go for the eurocarparts magnetti marelli dark cherry red inner and outer ones but will end up paying near enough the same as second hand OEM ones. £47.49 per outer light and £36.99 per inner lamp with bulbs and if you can get some discount even better.

I'm from the Harrow area.

This. it will make your car look much better - but it looks good anyway - so much better with the votes kit for sure :happy2:

Ahh nice, I've got a few friends up that side so wasted many an hour on the A40! Are there many London car meets?

Checked them out to today and you were accurate on the pricing. I might have to wait until someone's selling / breaking on here and pick a set up.

Haha okay think I'm being sold on the ED30 lights - will have to wait til I find some at a decent price. Thank you for the feedback! Quite nice knowing the votex kit gets so much appreciation!
-
I'm accurate because I used my ref to look them up
Sold a set for £100 last month not that I needed the money but wanted to give someone else the chance to have a good looking rear end on his golf
-
Ahhh gotcha - well I'm currently away in Florida for the next week and a bit so will investigate this when I'm back!
-
Aaaaaaaaand just when things were going nice, got the CEL on and a confusing issue around emissions and the EGR Valve. Great..
Got a thread here if anyone can assist: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,109492.0.html
Otherwise mods on hold for now :(
-
So! EGR issue has been repaired - hopefully fixed for good!
Provisionally looking at the next few changes - nothing crazy but I'm thinking:
- Cherry Hazard Switch
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321644260822
- LED Reverse Light
- Also need some additions to my detailing products - namely some soft bristle brushes and a new Lambswool washmitt (mine has started shedding!)
-
Right so been a while since I've had any updates - most of my plans have been on hold with Christmas coming up.
The past few weeks have resulted in a very dirty Golf (motorway driving and B-roads in the wet) haven't been kind. However, finally got some time yesterday so clean her up. Just did a pre-rinse / soak, usual two bucket method wash and dried. No polishing (didn't have time unfortunately).
See the before / after shots!

Now that she was looking half presentable, did a mini-roadtrip with the RX-8 friend. Little lap of Surrey Hills / Box Hill area, in some of the thickest fog I've ever seen! Pics below..

Nice car mate, would defo agree that ED30/R32 Rear lights would look amazing - I did it a few months ago and cheapest way I could do it was to go ECP for outer units (around £33.50 a side) and then ebay for the inners from europe and swapping the inner lenses around (few threads about regarding this) all in came to about £130-£140 iirc for brand new units all round. For some weird reason they didn't stock the inner whenI looked - might not still be the case though.
From South-West London too (Carshalton), shame there aren't as many meets around here as there seem to be in other parts of the country. :sad1:
-
Thanks for the feedback gman. I wish the ED30/R32 rear light mod wasn't so expensive! Thanks for the suggestion though, I'll have to look into it. Just got the rear pads & discs done and the brake fluid flushes so that set me back a little bit!
Nice to have someone else from around this way! And yes, shame there's not many meets this side. Do you have a build thread?
-
Welp, today is the day I plucked up the courage to put her for sale!
