Patience.
In the cold, the connectors can become hard and brittle and can snap.
You can go to the extreme of warming up with a hair dryer if you need.

there is just no room - passengerside loads of room

I often have problems like this..
The best thing to do is walk away for 20mins and come back with a fresh head! You can get frustrated and break things!
-
i put some oil on and see what happens
-
done! had to buy some circlip bent nose pliers to stick in the hole! apparently I was supposed to press on the tab really really really hard
and down forward and up ! live and learn !
-
i had the exact same probem when i was doing my lights. lost patience. came back to it sorted it lol
-
move the charcoal canister off its mount and move it out the way.. free's up some lovely space on drivers side

yes! - after walking away for a while I saw that the black boxy thing just comes off easily - think this is the charcoal canister you mention - helped a lot
but note there is still no room for a stubby! still have to hurt the fingers i think!
....but i did break the clip before I removed the black box lol....
