Title: Black soot
Post by: Meallbhan on October 14, 2016, 08:08:10 pm
Hi all, I have a 2005 gti with 93k on the clock with a revo stage one remap. There is a k&n panel filter and a precat delete.
I have been noticing small black soot smudges on the rear of the car and wondered why.
The car runs great with plenty of power and can return over 40mpg on a good journey.
So everything seems fine, but why the soot? The exhaust tips get black very quickly too.
Obviously the car would use a little more fuel under hard booting it due to the map, but is this normal? Would a terraclean fix this?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Black soot usually a sign the C ar is running rich. Much safer than if it's running lean :happy2:

But usually it would hurt your fuel economy which you've not noticed. So it's a bit of an odd one

Maybe someone more knowledgeable will be along soon to chip in!!

My tailpipes get blacked up quite quickly. Car's a Stage 2 with a Powervalve etc. Recent logging suggests the AFR is ok and I can get 40mpg if I try, so it's not something I worry about.

I think it's just a trait of the tfsi engines, my standard Ed30 also gets sooty tail pipes I wouldn't worry about it

Thanks for your replies. Sounds like I don't really have a problem then, just my OCD getting the better of me!
My revo settings are 5,8,9 but wondered about making the 9 an 8 to lean it of a bit. But probably not really much need.

It's spent power coming out the exhaust - don't worry

It's normal... Mines Revo Stage 2+ with WMI and the back is covered in black specks. Think my settings are B9T8F6
