How is Gods name do you get the carrier off with so much space just how... I have given up

Bigger bar or get a ratchet on and stand on it. Plus lots of swearing.

600mm breaker bar and a rubber mallet

But how... There is zero space mate... The fronts were easy as you could just turn the wheel outward

This is where a ramp comes in handy mate or a air gun

if you have a piece of pipe, plot it over your ratchet to give more leverage

Just changed mine, it is a pig, but if the car is jacked up higher, you can get a better angle on it and have the breaker bar at 6 o'clock position.
I couldn't torque mine up as not enough clearance to get the torque wrench into position, so just tightened it as much as I could with my ratchet!
-
It is tight but you can get a short breaker bar in. I used a universal joint on the socket and managed to get breaker bar and torque wrench inside the wheel arch.
-
Nooooooooooohhhhhh!!!
PLEASE, no extension bars on ratchets! I really get sick of lads at work wrecking ratchets when using scaffold tubes to extend handles. I've seen even quality 3/4" drive ratchets break like this.
Ratchets are for ratcheting!
Use a solid connection, like a T bar or better still a proper breaker bar.
And a proper lump hammer for a solid thwack, not a rubber mallet...
-
It can be a right pita without the right tools i.e. Ramp, breaker bar, etc

I understand what you mean but snap-on is lifetime guarantee so if it breaks you get it replaced for free :happy2:
-
I used the proper VW carrier tool and a ratchet. I then hit the ratchet with a hammer to crack it off. Worked fine
-
@Rich83 What does the VW tool look like? Is it just like a standard triple square spline socket?

Its a short one so gives you more space

works fine all the ones i have changed with no trouble
-
Yeah it really is a soul destroying thing to do.
I usually axle stand the car a little higher and use a large bar 800mm or so to crack it, then wratchet it off
-
Sorry in advance for the numpty question but what part of the car/job are you guys talking about? Just want to know for future reference?

That'll be a snap on rathchet then???????
-
I don't have a snapon ratchet...
But do have a 3/4" drive 4ft breaker bar...and a 14lb sledge hammer....
Should i have gone for the snapon? :stupid:
-
They are a horrid set of bolts to undo! I had to do my osr wheel bearing and these two bolts took me longer than anything! In the end, long are and a whole heap of power!!!

Removing the rear caliper carrier. :happy2:

It all depends on how often you use tools. I work in a body shop so use ratchets, sockets, spanners etc 5 days a week so it makes it worth spending the extra on snap-on stuff due to the constant use and it's lifetime guarantee so doesn't matter if you break it as it will be free to repair or replace except on electrical which is 1 year warranty

the carrier bolts
Thanks guys. I appreciate the replies :happy2:
I'm trying to build up as much knowledge as possible for the various jobs on the MK5. What a pain to have such hassle to remove what should be something simple like a caliper carrier :sad1:
-
Cut the very tip off the splined end of the bit, thereby allowing it to sit further into the bolt. This will give you enough clearance to get a ratchet on. :happy2:
-
I think MKMG76 may be on to something there...your spline bit sems very "deep". Shorten it down a bit as he says.
Sorry, but I can't leave the snapon ratchet thing alone just yet...
Went on the snapon site

£160 for a 1/2" ratchet!?!
Do you garage lads really pay these prices, or does it just seem cheap on the "never-never?
Either way, it's no wonder snapon give you a guarantee, it should be made of feckin titanium for that price!
Mental!
-
Done this job plenty of times, and lost skin and years off my life. I have never actually thought about changing the bolts for something simpler like a hex head. Could be done i suppose?
-
I feel your pain (and frustration). If it makes you feel any better, I gave up doing mine and booked it into the garage where they charged an hours labour to do both sides (pads and discs) on the rear. I've got better things to do with my time than spend hours (literally) getting stuck bolts off.
Fronts weren't a problem as you can get a good long breaker in there (plus about 1m pipe), but there's no room to do much with the rears. Managed to get the top bolt off on one side (after an hour), but the bottom one wasn't budging for love nor money.

It's like anything mate you get what you pay for, cheap ratchets are arite but if your using them every day they don't last long. I have a set of three snap on ratchets that Iv had for about 5 years using them every day and they still perform like new where as Iv had cheap ratchets that have lasted weeks and smashed my knuckles when they've broke
-
Been a mechanic for 10 years and my snap on ratchet never broke when abusing it with a 'extension' lol.
Like above though, a long breaker bar is whats needed :)
-
Thanks mate but honestly it's not that I'm onto something, it's that I had to figure it out and then go buy the particular socket/bit from Snap-On (not cheap) and then cut the end off it with a grinder! It was the only way to get it off without buying the stubby special tool from VW. Think I've used it twice since but it was worth every penny for an easy life!

Ive had my rears off the eddy twice now, and no problems...even with no snapon ratchet :pomppomp:
In fact I don't think I have any snapon tools at all...even on my oil/gas rig, which was built in the US.
The few Snapon quality tools that arrived with it have long since "been lost".
Hey, I'm curious, why do VW use these spline drive fastenings, when it appears to me that a normal bolt/machine screw would be appropriate?
