Title: New Air-Con condenser "killed" by a stone
Post by: Oldy on October 20, 2016, 09:33:00 am
Just had a new air-con condenser fitted to my MK5 GTI as air-con wasn't working.  Lasted 5 days before a stone, which must have come through the bottom honeycomb grill, embedded into the condenser and killed it completely.

Nothing I can do but replace it, but have any of you guys had this?  If so (and I can't find one if there is) is there a VW part/mesh that fits behind the grill to stop this happening?

Alternatively has anyone fitted some fine mesh behind the grill to prevent this.  As the condenser is at the front, my guess would be this must happen sufficiently often, such that VW should have done something about it (which doesn't' seem to have happened). My slight worry would be (although my GTI hasn't yet been plagued by as many rattles of some of the members cars here) it will vibrate and drive me nuts!!

Having done some more research I have found this to be a problem both with the Mk6 and Mk7.

Here is a link of how to fix a mesh protector behind the grill.  Admittedly for a MK7 but the same should work for the MK5.
