Title: Picked up my Gti today and broke down on the way home
Post by: TornadoV on October 30, 2016, 11:15:41 pm
Hi all,

Well it's not been a good start to Gti ownership so far! I bought the car as I wanted a good base to start with and as it has a full service history including a recent DSG service by a VW main dealer I thought it ideal  :signLOL:

On my way home it started missing very slightly with the engine light flashing for around 10 seconds, a minute or so later this stopped and it drove fine the rest of the journey home. I then took it out for a drive shortly after and it started missing heavily with engine light now permanently on. It now sounds like an Impreza but with half the performance.

I have done much reading on this great forum prior to singing up so I think from what I've read it is a coilpack issue, the worry I have is when it was last serviced in July VW carried out the coilpack recall. Can they really pack up after such a short time?

Many thanks,
Sam

coilpack, plug, injector, wiring or something much worse

Read the codes (make a note) and clear them to find out which cylinder, swap the coilpacks round and take for a gentle drive, check codes to see if misfire stays on the same cylinder or follows the coilpack. Do this again with sparkplugs until you determine, whether it is a plu & coil issue or whether you need to start looking at a new injector - which is a lot more costly in terms of parts & labour

Thanks for that will get on the case today and report back.

I have just been checking through the history and the plugs were changed this year to Denso VK22, are these a good choice?

Do what Dan said

Although If it was injector it would be alot worse lol

heavy misfire, need fuel out the exhaust, dash looking like xmas tree and probably wouldn't start after you turn it off as there would everywhere it should be lol

If you bought the car from a garage, then take it back

Well I took it to a friends earlier today who has a code reader and to my surprise it's coming up as no faults despite sounding like an Impreza!

I have given up with the car now and I've given it to a local garage to sort. Hopefully it's pretty simple.

I bought the car privately in good faith so it's my problem to rectify :(

I had a similar issue, cylinder 2 misfire I think it was. Changed coils, sparks and no joy turned out was an injector.

Car drives much better now and the engine light has stopped flashing and no juddering at all

I think this is going to be the issue seeing how recently both the plugs and coils have been replaced.

Did you got for a new injector or used? Also how much would I be looking at for an injector?

if its injectors i have a set of 4 used ones you can have for £40 plus postage

i scanned a car yesterday missfire cylinder 4 we swapped the plug to cylinder 3 and the coil pack to cylinder 2 cleared the faults and went for a run and missfire stayed on cylinder 4 so its a got to be an injector or faulty wiring on cylinder 4

3 hours work for a mechanic

That's a very generous price that you should snap up @TornadoV

I'm hearing more and more about people having injector issues causing misfires. Including me. Quite a big thread here that's got some useful info:

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=108488.msg1050653.msg#1050653

I guess these cars are now getting to 'that age'. Mine will be ten years old next year! I think it's a case of being prepared to pay for things like this when they come along if the car is more than an A-B, which I'm sure applies to the majority of us on here. I like to look at it in a positive light, in that my coils and plugs are new and my injectors are as good as new (refurbed), so I'm theoretically future-proofed for a while.

Anyway, best of luck sorting it.

Lot less common on the K03 injectors of the GTI but not unheard of as pointed out above.

Do yourself a favour when buying second hand injectors - send them to a specialist and have the checked and balanced. Unequal injectors will not be picked up by the engine management system which will simply trim injection times as needed to get to the correct AFR and can/will mask an injector problem very well (unless the injector is very bad - I.e. stuck open or shut)

Injectors are critical to the proper running of these engines as they run so lean compared with generations past. Balance and spray patterns are very important.

Thanks for that I really appreciate it. I'll hopefully hear back from the garage today and if it is injectors I'll have those 100%.

Thanks again guys for all of your input. I'll keep this thread thoroughly updated to hopefully help others as rightfully put they are getting on now so new issues I guess will start to arise.

Did you got for a new injector or used? Also how much would I be looking at for an injector?

I went for a brand new injector - cost me £250 all in parts and labour
