Hi Guys,
Just rang VW as my Ed 30 is up on 95k so wanted to get the Cam chain adjusted and im no expert but they are telling me there are 2 different engines and mine has a belt not a chain?? I know this is correct as i have had the belt etc changed but do the Ed30's suffer from this and have the same set up as the standard GTi?
Told me i dont need it done??
-
Why do you want it adjusted?
-
On cold start up i heard a slight little rattle so for the sake of a few £££ (plus im fussy) get it checked and adjusted if needed.
-
TFSI EA113 = Belt + chain.
TSI EA888 = Chain only.
There is no adjustment you can make, it's self regulated by the hydraulic tensioner.
The typical symptom of worn chain gear on the GTI/ED30/Pirelli is a diesel clattering noise inside the cabin (windows up) when hot idling. If you hear this, the only cure is to replace the cam chain and the tensioner, which I'm afraid is considerably more than a few ££s.
I had to that on my ED30 around that mileage.
-
Cheers for that Pudding make it alot more clear now :happy2:
i dont mind paying to get it done as that part of the maintenace when these miles come up but i was abit unsure of the process and what was needed.
Thanks again
-
Good man
It's not too bad a job DIY if you're competent with the spanners, and the parts are around £200 if I remember correctly. You also need a special tool to lock the cams together when cracking off the exhaust cam sprocket/VVT adjuster bolt.
Probably £800ish at a dealer, £400-£500 at an indy as rough ball parks.
-
Found a VW mechanic that is going to do this for me over the weekend :happy2:
Would any one know the part numbers/ parts i need to order ? Chain, tensioners etc etc
Thanks in advance

Try a search mate, someone listed the parts out not long ago.
How come you went from an S3 to an ED30? Just curious as I'm thinking of going the other way, lol!

Cam Chain 06D 109 229 B
Chain Tensioner 06F 109 217 A
Cam Cover Gasket 06F 103 483 D
Adjuster Bolt 06D 109 281 D
Chain Cover Gasket 06D 103 121 B
Tensioner Bolts (3) N-101-963-03
Chain Cover Bolts (7) N-101-243-08
Hose Clip N-907-399-01
Seal 06E127248
Thats the parts for a standard GTI. If they're the same required on an ED30 - that's all you'll need. :happy2:

I didnt go direct from S3 to and Edition 30 haha. I had a 57 Plate S3 stage 2+ then A Range Rover Sport, then back to a 09 Plate S3 (facelift) then Porsche 911 then to the Ed30 haha
But the question you want to know is what is better lol. Being totlay honest the S3 is a better car if your going for power due to the 4wd geting the power down, and the only other plus side is the Bose sound system, but bar that its vertualy the same as the Ed30.
The big diffrence realy is the Price's.
DSG S3 are £12k+ as all facelift where as the Ed30 DSG £7k+
Hope that helps a little.
But one of my regrets is selling my stage 2+ S3 as that was an absolute weapon :happy2:

Cheers mate, im sure the Ed30's are different, but correct me if im wrong (sorry)

edition 30 engine components are 99% all the same. course there are a few differences here and there. fairly confident the chain system would be the same though

Cheers mate!
My only regret when buying my Ed30 was getting a manual, otherwise it has a good spec. I'm bored of changing gears and the heavy clutch needed for remapped power, so it's time to get into a DSG. I'm undecided on whether to go DSG S3, or DSG Ed30! To be honest the Ed30 is better looking to my eyes than the S3, but I know the S3 is better made inside! Hmmm.....
-
Plus the DSG S3 is double the price of an ED30 DSG haha.
I have a DSG Ed30 buy mine if you want lol

I'd need to trade it in with a stealer against a DSG flavour, or swap it with someone who wants a manual, as it's my daily!

Just ordered the Parts with VW TPS and the Ed30 must be diffrent to the standard GTI as the parts where alot more expensive and also not as much was required,
Chain - £58
Tensioner - £88.12
-
Prices have just gone up a lot recently, that's all. They are the same parts on GTI & ED30
You will still need the gaskets etc and definitely the cam adjuster bolt as it's a one time use job.
-
They are saying the only gasket is the rocker gasket??
Just had the parts delivered and no bolt??
