Title: Any tech savy people about to help me with a head unit swap
Post by: OcTwenty on November 19, 2016, 02:09:29 am
hey guys, ive joined the mk5 club after the great advice i got from a previous thread last week but im still in need of your help please lads.
i picked up a nice little 2006 but it has the dated stereo in it (not the sat nav one) but i managed to find a spare legit VW sat nav/stereo on ebay taken out of a another mk5 golf now what im wondering is, is it a straight swap? or do i need any special cables/adaptors?  if so since im an idiot could anybody give me a link to what i need to buy pretty please? and will i also need a new surround to hold it in place?   thanks alot guys.

I take it by the dated one you mean rcd 300 and you have bought a rns510 if im right, you will need aerial adapters for the newer updated headunit you can get them on ebay cheap enough. The new headunit should be a straight plug and play in though the car may need coded after you install the new headunit

If you are swapping to the RNS 315/510 unit from the stock MK5 stereo most likely you will need to update the Canbus Gateway otherwise you will experience battery drain. Look out for the "7N0 907 530" gateways which will prevent this, it's about £20 but will need coding to your car. If you don't have VCDS (Vagcom) to code you can check to the forums to see if anyone near you can or check with your local VW specialist to see if they can do this for you.

Thanks for getting back to me guys.  Do you mean the Gateway itself will need coding to my Car or the new head unit i buy? cheers.
