Title: Oil leek help please
Post by: suave on November 21, 2016, 09:19:33 pm
Can anyone help me with the name or part number please? I have an oil leek on the right hand side of my gti engine - seems to be from the circular(ish) housing just below the engine cover and next to the battery.
Is there a seal or gasket in there that I could get cheap ish in case it is leaking from there?
Cheers

Hi mate, you talking about the timing chain housing/cover?. There is a gasket for it but a picture paints a thousand pictures

Sorry R5 but my phone is ancient.
It's on the right hand side just below engine cover and is kinda circular with torx bolts - about fist sized

If you can, get some pictures of the part you're talking about, and try and work out exactly where the leak is coming from (pictures of the leak origin would be best!) However from your description Im fairly certain you're talking about the vacuum pump. Mine leaked from there as well. You can replace the O-ring on the vacuum pump which should solve your leak.

You can do it yourself depending on how handy you are, take the battery out to give more access. When you have replaced the O-ring and are reinstalling the vacuum pump don't over tighten the bolts - trust me.

I replaced the seal but was still left with a misty type oil leak so ended up replacing the whole unit.
They have changed the design slightly and looks a much better part , that's when I discovered some tiny little piston rings had also broken but that's another story.

I too replaced the whole vac pump unit too for a revised unit, but that was because I tightened the bolts too tightly and ended up cracking the housing
