Post by: V6nutter on November 27, 2016, 07:46:41 am
Would anyone know why the buttons don't light up?

Ive pulled the CAN information from the unit

Speed Signal 0km/h
CAN Reversing off
KL15 on
KL58 d 94%
S-Kontact on
Mute bit off
Analog mute off
Mute Value 0

Do these look ok?

Just been quoted £700 to fix the unit. Can't believe nobody else on here has had this issue.

What is the unit version and how did it happen? Just sudenly stopped to work? There is no part in the unit for 700.

Is it star button or speaker on the top? next to the injection button? and how did it happen? Also, do you have vcds or similar tool to check can connection? It uses different can connection and for example if you have polar fis or other thing that uses the same can connection line and if you unplug it, the cans will not work, illumination aswell. Secondly, can controller is the part of the main board, but  I haven't seen any unit that would die naturally, it is possible after accident or water damage. The main board is around 200 plus labour.
If you are near leeds, I could put the unit on the desk and using special software do the diagnostic, check illumination etc.

It has the speaker icon. So go figure this. I just go to the car and unlock it all the lights come on including the lights on the RNS. However they go off when you turn ignition on. I'll get a video up if I can. Thanks for your replies, I'm in Nottingham so not a million miles away.

So now I've been told SW4020 is not compatible with H03 and could cause damage to the LCD board I've been told to downgrade to 3810.

I had a modded 4020 with an H03 unit and an A hardware.
I would revert the firmware to try, but if you go older than 3800 you will repartition the hard drive and lose your maps

I will use 3810 - I think I have D Hardware (1T0035680D) H03 unit...
Do you know of a link where I can download the firmware?

I bet you have an A unit. When the firmware gets updated, it falsely updates the unit part number you see. It'll be on a sticker on the side, but you would have to remove it. A true D would have a star at the top right.

I haven't had one of these for a couple of years now, but I will look for you

That's exactly the page I was about to post. Best to avoid a firmware modded to avoid battery drain. You'll need to find the procedure for starting a downgrade.

You might lose maps and music on the hard drive doing this, but got to be worth the risk at this point. If this doesn't work, then go back to 2760 but that will 100% wipe your maps.

It is definitely not a D unit so 4020 is about as high as it could go.

Good luck

It is A,B or early C version. Use modified file. I think it is Can issue. So wires or faulty mainboard.

You did well for sticking it out, it can be frustrating. I always found a CD better for firmware.

So are you at 2760 or 3800 now?

Sorry to say you are about to hit another issue with reloading of the maps. The A unit has a smaller hard drive so you need to reload a modified firmware from the rnsfirmware site - look for 3800-4020 versions with a 60/35/5% split (the newer maps won't load due to insufficient space on a non storage-modded firmware).

You'll not be able to go higher than 4020 on a B unit and you'll need the 70/25/5% firmware to fit the newer maps on due to the small hard drive capacity.

I don't know anyone who repairs the guts of them

I had a version A RNS-510 fitted from factory on my Ed. 30. I was able to upgrade the firmware to the modified version 4120 with 60/35/5 and V12 maps. Then I successfully upgraded to modified version 5238. It worked really good with that firmware as Josi and others advise. I then sold it because the CD lenses was much more sensible than newer radios.

So, for me, most of the times, the trouble with upgrading the firmware and maps is due to the dirt in the CD lenses. Cleaning it with a cleaning CD or opening the radio and directly cleaning the lenses can solve the issues with upgrading.

I did a lot of updates on my A when I had it, but couldn't get it to take 4120, highest was 4020.

Just noticed I wrote 70/25/5 on the last message, that was meant to read 60/35/5.

Personally I think you are better off buying a much newer version (with the star button top right) for £300-400 and selling yours on, even with your light issue you would get decent money. You can get maps from various sources to get yours back to normal, as such.

But that's just me.

Yeah, not worth fixing for 200 when the unit like yours cost around 250. Better sell this one for the spares, you will get 100-150 and get a LED one.

You can consider fitting the radio in another car. If your car came with the RNS-510 from factory your CAN is a rev L, which is compatible with newer firmwares, so that shouldn't be the problem. Just writing this because if the radio doesn't know when the car lights are turned on, it won't turn the lights on of its buttons.
