Title: Loose gear onob
Post by: GtiKris on December 01, 2016, 10:03:08 pm
Hi guys

Does any of you suffer with loose gear leaver/knob?

Mine feels very wobbly, like it is not connected correctly.

Not very direct/precise when shifting as well.

Any advice please?

Is this the original OEM shifter? It should be snug tight without excess movement, make sure the metal ring is clamped tight around the plastic fixings of the knob, you can do this by gripping on the gearbox base with your hands and pull it up to expose the lever and then use pliers to tighten the metal ring.

If it's an aftermarket knob then there could be the possibility the plastics is not being thick enough or the metal clamping ring is too big causing it to move around the lever. I had a €20 knob which looked nice but had poor fitment - the plastic tabs was very thin and flexed about which consequently made gearchanges very slack. I decided to get a genuine Edition 35 gearknob in the end and it fitted tight as well as solving my slack gear changes.

It is oem leaver and knob.

Ill see if I can get it off tomorrow and check for anything loose, not tight elements etc.

Just checked it an it looks like this....

Don't think this white plastic bit holds the leaver tight enough, looks worn to me.

Should I replace it? Is it hard to do?

Ive got the exact same problem, it seems to be where the plastic fits into the  metal on the left hand side, there is movement. I dont know if you can change it easily?
Its very annoying when changing quickly

I changed the gear level bushing and it made no difference whatsoever. My problem lies where the plastic insert goes into the metal casing. I can see there is some slack inside but have no idea if its an easy fix or requires a replacement gear linkage?
